We haven't even gotten a standard HDR format yet for instance. Most countries don't even broadcast in 1080p. The problem with all consoles now are that they are essentially PCs without the flexibility of tuning your settings and enhancing your experience depending on how much money you have.

Storage is by far the biggest problem. 500GB HDDs would have been nice in 2011, but in 2017 even 2TB drives are pretty small. And with game sizes expanding the console manufacturers are going to have to deal with standards like USB3.0 becoming too slow in another generation or so.

The second problem is the flexibility. With PC hardware I can buy and sell hardware whenever I feel like it and always be ahead of the curve. I bought an RX480 for really cheap on black friday because I knew there were some games I wanted to play coming out soon, so for less than half the price of a PS4 Pro, I got a card that pushed 1440p60 and 4K30 with higher settings than I would have got on PS4 Pro.

And when I got bored of those games and knew I wasn't going to be gaming in the next couple quarters I sold it and went back to Intel graphics.

Consoles will never have that kind of variability or freedom unless we start doing the whole "cloud streaming" thing, and we all know how that turned out with OnLive. The only advantage of major games running from the cloud is the possibility of having massive worlds that wouldn't fit on a normal hard drive. I'm talking an MMO or Battlefield game with 1TB or more of art assets and models. That would be really interesting to see.

The biggest problem of the Scorpio is the lack of penetration of 4K TVs. People aren't going to go buy a $800 TV for a $600 console.

And downsampling isn't enough of a feature for people to want to upgrade. They're going to need to come out with "Scorpio-only" games and that's going to split their audience.

Agreed, but at this point these companies would be better off just focusing their development efforts on the software alone and agree on base standards for hardware.

Both the Xbone and PS4 are literally the same silicon with a couple of tweaks. If both Sony and MS went 50/50 on a new console that they both could agree on then both gamers and they would benefit from the single platform. It would be like Toyota and Subaru making the FR-S/BRZ.

The reason Nintendo built the Switch was to do this very thing, hardware is so commodified now that there's no point in investing a shitload of resources into multiple different consoles when you can unify all of your software guys onto a single monolithic platform and achieve both the portable and home console experience at once. Many consoles that sold the most in their generation were not the most powerful one. I don't think they have much to worry about when it comes to PC. There are many people who simply will not play on PC, they like a simple box to play games on, and no matter how cheaper it gets PC gaming will not be a thing for them, ever. The power of PC does nothing to those people, because they don't care, and probably will never care.

The PS4 Pro is an attempt to keep the ball rolling, because with the change of consoles to the PC-esque architecture, now they want a business model around selling upgrades to the base model, and this means easy backwards compatibility. This was their plan all along, I don't think the PC is taking users from PS4, and the sales of the Pro are showing the market isn't really hungry for more power in the console arena. People are satisfied with the PS4, Sony may put whatever spin they want on why the Pro exists, but they said long ago they wouldn't make a totally new box next time, it will be an upgrade over the PS4 with the same architecture, gone are the differently made consoles, the Emotion Engine vs the Cell.

Yeah i'm making an argument based on history of console sales, but I still think the PS4's "secret" to success wasn't its power over the Xbone at all. It was just the cheapest way to get into the new generation, and I mean the new generation console with 3rd party support. I'd say price, cost/effective ratio (ie what you can do with it) and 3rd party support seems to be far more important than how powerful consoles are, if you analyze all the consoles that sold the most.

I'm not going to say it has no importance or else people would stick with the old consoles, but it's not important enough for people to base their purchase on "I'm not getting this console if it's weaker than the other", nah that ain't happening, you also have to factor other aspects such as price and what you're getting for that price, and the support it may or not get.

I think the better question is, that Microsoft may have built the 'most powerful home console' that it doesn't really matter.
