It launches in the West 6 months later, WITH a price drop to $199, sells insanely well. N64 is a massive success being the most powerful 3D console in the market, priced the same as its competition. It beat out the Saturn which quickly fell off the radar. Making it a two horse race between the PlayStation and N64.

Lifetime sales of both consoles.

To say the N64 was a failure shows you weren't around for its peak. It was only a failure in hindsight. It's the same for the Switch, it's doing really well now, but... so do all Nintendo consoles. Switch will most likely live up to the expectation.

We will know the truth by the end of E3 2017, but barring the release of a Microsoft/Sony portable before Holiday 2017, the Switch will dominate Christmas absolutely.

And any Sony/Microsoft portable offering couldn't be an effective hybrid console, as it could damage rapport with established mainstream console owners.

And any portable or hybrid consoles software sales would adversely effect that same companies established home console software sales.

If the portable games were the same but cost less, at the minor drawback of resolution, people with both devices would opt for portable.

Not even mentioning portable devices are typically more popular with children, and most modern console games don't allow for splitscreen gameplay (it's sad times people)

TL:DR

The only threat to Nintendo would be a comparable hybrid console, but Sony/Microsoft couldn't make a serious competitor without potentially effecting their mainstream home console business.

It would be very tricky to a serious contender to appear, unless it came from a third party manufacturer (Apple / Google / Amazon)

A Switch competitor is very unlikely to appear this console generation.

New hardware development and production is expensive, more likely than not we will see serious Switch competition nearing the end of the PS4/XO life-cycle.

Until then it would even be tricky for third party manufacturers to sell hardware because of the already well established audience of all three brands, with many households already owning multiple consoles.

2020 will probably have some absolutely crazy portable shit coming out.

And with VR becoming more prevalent it will undoubtedly be incorporated into at least some next-gen home/hybrid/portable hardware.

Not to mention PC is going to see much more serious competition for gaming now that home consoles are becoming so advanced (when games are well optimized in particular)

The insides of PS4/XBO are already starting to make standard PCI-E mobo architecture seem simple, albeit high end components blow that out of the water, for now.
