The later games in the series have some kind of actual story mode, instead of you making your own party. What do people think of this? On the one hand I can definitely see the appeal of a more story centric experience with defined characters that interact with each other instead of merely pretending in your imagination, but on the other hand it really seems to lose quite a bit of charm you know?

Only the remakes have story mode, all the mainline games have always been a "create your own adventure" but with a little plot shoved in so your characters can react however you wish.

EO caught me for that exact reason, for me it is very fun to just create my own characters and imagine them doing all sorts of things and reacting in so many different ways. I can go and replay older games again and imagine a new story, as basic or ridiculous as I can imagine.
