It's mostly personal preference. Deen can become a Dread Fighter which is an amazing class but Celica already can have at least 3 others (4 if you made Atlas a Merc). On the other hand Sonya has pretty good stats for her level and starts with Excalibur for easy combat. However Sonya is stuck with 4 Move which sucks for the swamp maps in Act 4.
If you kill Deen you'll get his Brave Sword for Grieth's Fort, while killing Sonya only gets you a Steel Shield for the same map.

Thank fucking god, the support convos took a MASSIVE fucking dive with an Avatar that can support with literally everyone, and the waifubait shipping bullshit that means characters all have to have a large pool of potential suitors for the player to pick from. Repeat for literally every character pairing in the game for both Awakening and Fates. And since you can support with as many people as you want from each character's list, it very quickly becomes repetitive as the one- or two-note characters only have so few personality traits for their supports to revolve around. And to keep continuity in line, they can never grow or develop as characters in their later supports, because if they (for example) overcome trauma in an A support, there's no way to take that growth into account for a C support with another character; they still need to have the trauma no matter how many people they support with, and how far into the conversation they get with them.
The supports in the Waifu Emblems are empty, soulless, repetitive drivel, and I'd take the worst of Echoes' supports (probably Faye clamoring over Alm's dick) over any of Awakening and Fates' any day.

The issue isn't having an avatar (new mystery did it more or less right - they weren't the centerpiece for the plot, just secondary actor and the player's PoV, and they had their own story but it didn't overtake the plot like a tumor; with a little less kris dicksucking it would be great). It's not even having romantic supports (marriage and child units were a big part of Geneology, a great game, and earlier pre-awakening games had romantic supports that made sense and were well written); it's the fact that the avatar is a super special snowflake and the center piece of the plot, and the supports are made so they're easy to write and with no regard for whether those two characters make sense together.
