The issue with Bowser, for a while, was that he was purely comic relief, doubly so in Paper Mario since he usually does something (willingly or not) in Mario & Luigi. In fact, Bowser having no dialogue in Sticker Star was specifically because Miyamoto didn't like how IS was treating Bowser.

I'll buy a new Nintendo console the day they kill off the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Star Fox franchises. But we all know that will never happen.

No matter how many layers of fresh paint Nintendo gives it, I'm simply not interested in replaying basically the same games with the same characters as the games I played almost two decades ago. It reminds me of Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Futurama. You can always go back and enjoy those shows, but no matter how good they were, eventually the best thing you can do is kill them off before they turn into total dogshit or, like The Simpsons, live solely off its own fame, surviving by the thinnist string of mediocrity.

In fact, I see a lot of parallels between the classic Nintendo franchises and The Simpsons. They are both too big to simply die, but too old to remain relevant. They are both always trying to do "new" and "fresh" things to revitalize interest in themselves, but at the same time they are unwilling to make any changes too radical upset the brand. Neither one puts out exceptionally bad products, but it's obvious that the real talent that drove the franchises forward cashed out a long time ago or is flat out dead by now.
