Stems back to the PSX being the more popular system in the 90's, really. Sega used to be the top dogs back in the early 90s (at least they were here in the UK, alongside shit like the Spectrum), but then the Saturn flopped and the market was easy pickings for Sony at that point.

Nintendo weren't as prevalent as they were in the US or Japan over here either; the NES was kind of the black sheep during the 80s against the home computer market and the Master System, and the Megadrive was more popular than the SNES after that. They didn't have the market presence they held elsewhere, which gave the PSX a clear advantage, and they've held that ever since. The exception was the first half of last gen with the PS3 pricing debacle; the 360 did really well, but MS in their infinite wisdom shot themselves in the foot with the Bone and Sony once again helped themselves to market advantage.

PlayStation totally engrained itself into European culture in the late 90s.

It was sort of like that here but not nearly as much. I remember my older sister having friends over to play PlayStation. The PlayStation is what clicked for me, Wipeout, and Metal Gear, and Gran Turismo and everything.

My British friends only own a Xbox One because of FIFA partnership. But this year it has a Sony partnership and I honestly see them trading them in.

None of them care at all about Nintendo.

XBox never really caught wind here, and gaming in NES and SNES generations was kinda weak. It was only around the N64/PS1 generation that it started picking up here, and Sony just knew how to market themselves better. Due to more liberal release policy, many Playstation games got dubbed and translated even in smaller countries like Sweden and Finland, so that made the system clear choice for the parents. I can't think of any N64 game that got same treatment.
More recently, Nintendo hasn't really done much to try and win Europe over, even more so with them keeping their systems region locked and us getting fucked by release schedules harder than any other regions.

Microsoft fucked up the launch of the Xbone. It was too expensive, had no games, and run worse than the PS4. So now it's really cheaper, but it's too late.
Most of my friends have a PS4 and I have a PS4. If a friend gets an Xbone today, he won't be able to play with us, so he'll get the PS4, which is better and has more games anyway.
As for the Switch, it has no games except Zelda. It's still amazing that it manages to sell that well with only 1 game.

People were willing to forgive Sony's PS3 debacle because at its heart it was just a pricing issue. And the PS3 as a machine was vastly superior to the 360 which ultimately justified it costing more.

Microsoft demonstrated with the Xbone that they were being specifically devious, controlling and coniving with all the policies that they wanted to embed. They wanted to kill off the 2nd hand gaming market and use their Kinect to gather vast swathes of information on its user to tailor ads to them.

Not only the above, but the way Microsoft went about trying to justify their actions and then the half-assed and passive aggressive apologies they were forced to issue really put the nails in their coffin

I dont think that the wider gaming community is ready to forgive them just yet. Or ever.

Not really many console exclusive games anymore, as almost all of their exclusives are also on the W10 store, but it's still got all the Halo's if that's your thing, and Sunset Overdrive is a blast, as well as Rare Replay.
