Holiday 2017 is the goal however that could change, The goal is to actually release them close together because past sales like Fusion and Prime giving you the Fusion suit and Super Smash Bros 3DS and Wii U giving you Mewto. The difference is that Mario is a huge and successful franchise with a bunch of games that easily break millions of copies worldwide even when things get experimental.

Metroid is a comparatively much smaller and more niche franchise that, even at its very best, has never sold well, especially in Japan. The most successful Metroid game, the first Prime, didn't even break 3 million.

Im glad you asked anon, both games will be the metroidvania style, the 3D Metroid will play like the original Prime games with new bigger worlds that aren't just there to brag about having a big open world. Expect many types of environments however don't expect dimensional stuff like the Dark Aether.

As for the side scrolling 2D Metroid it will be in a facility as i said earlier so it will have a more Isolated close quarter feeling. However this might chance because there isn't much details about it yet.

-It will be a much bigger open world, multiple planets with unique environments to explore, the world wont be as big as say The Witcher 3 but the world won't be boring and only have a few places where stuff is happening.

-Story won't be a focus in this game, after the failure of Other M it will be back to the "Scan objects" to find out about the lore, this has allowed more time to be focused on gameplay.

-New Beams
Like all the other Metroids there will be new beams, like usual it will only be 5 however there will be 3 new ones (the regular beam and ice beam will return) that you will find on the new planets in the game.

Why do Metroidfags want this? The whole appeal of the Metroid franchise isn't that it's open-world, it's that it's seemingly non-linear in that it drops you into a world you must figure out the layout of in order to navigate and also obtain new abilities that let you traverse the environment, opening up new paths, discovering secrets, in new ways. There's always an intended order, a sequence, that the player is meant to play through, although it's possible to break this sequence in a lot of the games, which is also part of the appeal.

But Metroid should literally never go full open-world. Awful idea.

The Zero Suit should be like something astronauts wear underneath their space suits, basically kinda like something you'd wear for protection in extreme environments, which makes a lot of sense considering that Samus can go deep-sea diving with the Gravity Suit or withstand walking completely submerged in lava.
