Why?

First blind playthrough I randomly got a ton of souls when I passed by his area without knowing why. I guess now that his AI fucked up and he jumped into the lava.

Second playthrough when I encountered him properly for the first time I parried him to death. Third time I lead him to the Black Knight on the bridge above and let them duke it out. The Black Knight wrecked him. Black Knights do not fuck around.
