Can someone please explain what the "TORTanic" was?

I hate this retarded meme. /v/ shitting on upcoming or newly released video games is a habit that has existed literally for as long as /v/ has. If you attribute that kind of shitposting to TOR or any other game, you're either a newfag or you have incredibly poor memory.
>>
>>378344995
This.
I don't understand how so many people want to try and recreate this.
>DUR HURR EVERY NEW GAME IS BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY
Doesn't it get old?
>>
>>378344558
It started off with its reveal trailers - though the moment the gameplay was shown /v/ went apeshit on it.

Everything looked fucking terrible.

Bare tidbits were revealed to hide away what little end-game the game actually had.

Couple that with shittery on Biowares end (Stanrey Woo etc etc) and it turned in a huge meme.

The fact that it failed terribly only solidified it.
>>
>>378345414

No, we didn't have WORST GAME EVER BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY threads for every single new game prior to SWTOR.
>>
TL;DR of it is:

Bioware announces massive MMORPG.

DA2 came out recently and was a massive dissapointment, and /v/ saw the trend in the development.

Videos came out showing how awful the animation quality was.

Game had a 500 million dollar budget but still looked awful because they spent most of the money on marketing.

Game failed on launch to reach even 1/2 of their projected sales.
>>
>>378344558
BioWare hyped up TOR (The Old Republic) to be the most epic and awesome MMO since World of Warcraft.
It wasn't. From horrible bugs, to nazi-like forum and chat mods, to banning people trying to cancel subscriptions, to the gameplay simply being bad, it was an all-around disaster.
The name is a reference to the Titanic ship.
>>
>>378345683
We don't have "WORST GAME EVER BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY" threads for every single game now either. It's just the same amount of shitposting that newly released video games always gotten in here. Seriously, you're embarrassing yourself.

>>

It happened to literally every AAA release for at least three years straight. Horizon was the last title I can think of that had that sort of shitposting, but it seems to have finally died down.
>>

But a lot of the new mainstream games are complete and utter shit.
It's not /v/. It's big publishers literally stopped making good games.

2012 was generally a year of huge wars between MMO fags, wasn't it? SWToR, TERA, GW2 and another WoW expansion clamoring for the MMO throne.
Funny how none of those games are relevant anymore now.
>>
>>378346570
I started lurking in 2014. Now what?
>>
The most offensive part of TOR was how they were obviously spending the massively bloated budget on marketing instead of the game.

Marketing got professional, slick CGI movies animated; meanwhile BioWare development team paid for a buggy, SHITTY, prototype indie game engine on the cheap which was in now way designed to do what they were doing with it. It was such an embarrassment the engine's developer came out and said that he had no contact with BioWare after they paid for the engine, and if you want to see GOOD IMPLEMENTATION then refer to these [small indie MUD-tier games]

TOR was completely irrelevant in shaping /v/. Only newfags parrotting newfags say otherwise.
The only events that really changed the board were:
-The game industry getting progressively worse (or at leas different) during the last gen. Lots of fanbase betraying that made people bitter.
-The /v/-/vg/ split. The cocksuckers that balanced the place all moved there to circlejerk for eternity.
-The often forgotten great /b/ invasion of around 2010. Whole affair was fucking disgusting and it was all Moot's fault.
>>
>>378347883

It makes sense though. It's WoW Clone #6345, the only thing that sets it apart is being Star Wars so that's what they focused on.

/pol/ successfully tracked down the bike lock assaulter at the Berkeley protest riots a month or two back and hes been arrested and being tried in mid June. He's facing 25 to life with Californias 3 strike rule.
>>
>>378349285
Nah, you're a liar and a dumbass. /v/ has had several big blunders prior to TORtanic, with Spore being one of the biggest ones. Googling 4chan on KYM doesn't make for a good substitute, kiddo.
>>
>>378349520
Nope been here since 2006 ever since /b/ was linked to WoWs off topic forums. The board has been angry and depressed forever but never as cynical or pessimistic as it has been since TORtanic. Youre wrong and the newfag here buddy.
>>
>>378349024

The biggest factor has been /pol/. It started off okay (as in they stayed inside their containment board, the content itself was always terrible), but attracted a ton of people from /r/t_d and similar places which spilled over into the rest of 4chan.

Actually, I blame society as a whole for getting too politicised, A lot of people nowadays seems to think everyone is really interested in their retarded armchair politics and shoves in it everyone's faces as much as possible. And the more 'controversial' they believe their views to be the harder they scream. (see /pol)

>Actually, I blame society as a whole for getting too politicised

that's the actual problem, not /pol/ itself. there are plenty of people who comment on shit that's been politicized that don't even go to /pol/.

most of the shitposting comes from /tv/
>>
>>378349937

/tv/s shitposting is annoying and stale, but harmless.
I'd rather see someone repeating the same phrase over and over thinking that makes it funnier than the shit that comes from /pol/.
>>
>>378349729
You don't know what you are talking about.
/pol/ is a recent development, and both /v/ and 4chan as a whole were already swarmed by redditors even before /pol/ were a thing.
Same thing about the politicization of the hobby.

Most people on /v/ were claiming it was going to be absolute shit (there were many reasons to believe so). On launch, the game turned out to be a failure of catastrophic proportions. Subs took a nosedive after the initial gametime ended and the game was forced to go free to play really fucking quickly in order to keep it going.

Since then, /v/ has resorted to calling every game "the biggest blunder of 201X" in the hopes of recreating that "I was right" feeling.

It's when this place turned from video game discussions to shitposting.

Long story short: it had over 200 millions budget, a lot of it was spent on voice and when it was released it looked and played underwhelming, couldn't amass big enough playerbase despite being fastest growing MMO and after reaching like a million subscribers with its incredibly overblown budget it started quickly dwindling and they moved to F2P model.

In short, it just sounds hilarious, they spent 200 million dollars on F2P MMO that doesn't look any better than the ones Korea and China shit out on yearly basis.

It probably has definitely already made money back, but despite its overblown budget it looks like shit, plays like shit and has never reached the heights of World of Warcraft.

>>378344558

It was a huge IP (Star Wars) being made by a huge AAA dev (Bioware) and being published a huge conglomerate with unlimited funds (EA). By all rights, those three things combined should have made SWTOR the biggest, best selling game of all time, but it hilariously bombed right out of the gate anyway. That's why people compared it to the Titanic, the unsinkable ship that sunk on its first voyage.
>>

Maybe they're still running it to avoid it being a worse commercial failure than it was. Killing it off would have meant a lot of resentment from fans, and no way of making back even a modest amount of the budget.

That it's still running today just means that it's average monthly earnings are bigger than the operatings costs. Not that it is as such a commercial success.
>>
>>378354597
it was a failure, the game went F2P, and had to trap customers to meet payment (the whole unsuscribe button disappearing)

it's a huge fucking blunder, yeah, it wasn't the end because they had a huge publisher behind but it failed in EVERY aspect

>didn't create a succesful MMO that had the objective to surpass wow and became 1º
>didn't managed to even stay monthly payment, had to go to the cash shop/f2p route and give suscribers retarded boosts
>barely managed to return any investment, and that with the help of the most profitable IP of the world

>>
>>378354808

If you want story in your mmo (for some reason) it is decent game. Swtor have better story elements than any other mmo simply because stories in all other mmos are incredibly bad. It was the only mmo where you cared what happens (without being a lorefag). This fact doesn't make it a good mmo tho.

I still don't consider it as a "blunder" or "epic failure" as it didn't immediately dissapeared into oblivion. It somehow survived and some people enjoyed the time they had playing the game. I can always see a couple of guys faintheartedly saying good things about the game in every swtor thread that comes up now and then.

So yea, I think it did ok. Now if it didn't have the Star Wars name behind it, that would have been a blunder.
>>
>>378355627
it made it unplayable because they did retarded things like making the pot flowers have the same details as a fucking character

however, the engine has been toned down and is fine, unless it's Odin or something like that, Heavensward zones were pretty and big, because the loading times are due to ps3 limitations

in SWTOR I get massive drop of FPS in PVP (when I played it) on a computer that's very decent, meanwhile I can easily mantain 60 fps in FFXIV PVP with 72 ppl doing shit

Among the good ones some were trash I agree. But for me every one of them gave me context behind grinding a hundred copy/paste minions. Helped my suspension of belief. Also I was preffering certain companions over others simply because I liked their personalities and wanted to hear what they have to say about stuff going around me, instead of you know choosing one solely based on numbers on the screen.

>I mean, it's barely an mmo. It's just like a single player bioware game with mmo-tier quests.
I agree and I'm ok with it because I went through most of the content with other people which made it really fun for me. Since I'm a casual guy who values interaction with other people over solo grind/tryharding or whatever, it fit me, although I can understand how it can suck for other people.

the quest stories in SWTOR start to thin out by the time you are out of the starter planet

then you had to do a ton of side quest (that were literally kill X or gather X but with 300€ million in voice acting) and the planetary quest that some were good, most were trash

I was talking about when it came out, I know that you can easily level through story/planetary quest only now

and the companions weren't bad, but some of them were shit (like Corso), it was a good point, but there wasn't really much interaction with them because you needed ton of gifts to get interactions (now you get them after a certain point in your story or something)

>>378357461
The problem with new MMOs is that they bite off way too much.
When was the last time an MMO showed off early stages of gameplay or let people play early stages of gameplay so that they could get EARLY feedback and make the changes needed?

These companies somehow convince people to give them hundreds of millions of dollars and then build a massive bland world with the bare minimum parts everywhere.

What they should be doing is creating rich in depth parts that build on each other, and get feedback throughout the process.
>>
>>378357826

>I was talking about when it came out, I know that you can easily level through story/planetary quest only now

Yea I realized it too. I have only completed the consular story on launch (which was nothing special). The others I completed much later, when it became possible to level through only story quests which was an improvement. I really enjoyed those, especially the Sith warrior one, I liked everyone trying to suck up to me.

Now this new(ish) storyline is even better. There really was some hard choices, environments were great, writing was decent etc. Now it makes me realise that the game gets better at being a single player rpg than being an mmo.

No because there are times when the board is notably less shitty, between GMT -5 02:00 until 15:00 Monday-Friday. After that there's a noticeable drop in quality and spike in shitty threads/posts. This correlates directly with the times most Americans are either sleeping or away from the house at school or work. This natural time barrier becomes eroded in the summer.

The worst time to be on the internet, and this goes beyond /v/ to game servers and beyond, is GMT-5 18:00 to 1:00.
