Go to the status screen and move over to the class mastery page, stars will fill up green to indicate how much progress you have made.

As for how long, early game it takes a long while, but once you start fucking about with the cheat shop, abusing Prinny Instructor, etc., it becomes trivial. Hell, once you reach LoC, a single kill will usually max you out.

No one is as boring as Adell. But like a lot of D4's cast, he just never goes anywhere. He never changes, he never grows, he never struggles, he's just there, more often than not repeating the same jokes. Also he let Fuuka in the party, that's unforgivable.

Set up your entire team before executing attacks. You do more damage this way too.

Use team attacks, do this by standing next to an enemy with allies standing next to your attacking character, and using a regular attack.

Or just use a Sage and blast everything with a Land Decimator.

All pre-post game grinding is based around having the cheat shop, which you will get soon. You can however chuck enemies onto each other to combine their levels, have one character pick up said enemy to give you one turn to prepare, then kill it with tower attacks. It's not an amazing strategy, but it will get you a few levels if you're somehow having trouble progressing.

Nah son, we Cheat Shop now.

Just look for maps that have neat groupings of enemies, or check back on some maps that had geo panels that boost foes. Some of those maps change to EXP-boosting panels after clearing them once, so you can grind easily there.

That said, you shouldn't need to grind too much for most of the main game as long as you keep your gear up to date.

I've been grinding using item world. I've done maybe three runs in there, about 30-40 floors, and my highest level char is around 50. I'm in chapter four, after where you fight the yellow prinny. This is my first disgaea game.

From what I'm reading, I'm doing it wrong and I should just go through the story?

I'm okay with a character never really growing as long as he's entertaining or engaging to watch. All of Valvatorez's character development was done in the past, and he does act as a guiding figure to Desco and Emizel and some of the non party characters, which I like.

He's also the best Prinny master by a landslide.

Because he's not that kind of main character. Valvatorez himself gets basically no growth at all because he already went through all that shit a very long time ago, he isn't some teenager struggling with daddy issues that needs to find himself. Valvatorez part in the story is to rear the others, he's acting as a facilitator, a guide, and instructor for their growths.
Also you are absolutely blind if you think nobody in D4 had any kind of character development, absolutely everyone but himself are nowhere even remotely close to the people they were when they first got introduced at the end of the game. It doesn't quite hold your hand as much as the formulaic and boring as shit ""character development"" you get in D5 where it quite literally slaps you in the face over and over until you can't help but be tired of it, but that doesn't mean they aren't there.

There isn't much to do in D5 postgame, it's weaker than even original D3's.
Getting strong enough for Baal is pretty easy too, if you know what you are doing it takes maybe 7-10h after you beat the main story's final boss to get strong enough. There's a speedrun that kills him in a little over 10h from a fresh file.

I don't remember if 1 had full blown tower mechanics, but I do know that you don't have to reincarnate to get upgraded classes in 5 and a lot of the systems are much smoother. Where do i start if i want to get into disgaea?

The first game. It's rather dated mechanically compared to later entries but its story is by far the strongest of all disgaea games. Mechanically it's hard to go back to after playing later games so I'd advise you start there.

There's the PS2 original, the PSP remake with Etna mode, a DS version (lol), and a version released for PC recently.

I'd recommend playing Disgaea 1 at some point before playing Disgaea 2 or Dimensions 2, but other than that you can play them in whatever order without really missing anything.
D1 and D4 are considered to be the best ones by most people, so pick one of those I guess. D1 has a steam port while the definite version of D4 is only on Vita.

D5 simplified and streamlined everything and only drip feeds you new mechanics.
It's not hard at all to get into compared to what D3 and D4 were like. It's still a lot more involved than games like FFT, but it shouldn't be that difficult. Keep in mind that unlike the other games it's absolutely impossible to fuck anything up in D5, so don't worry about the things you don't immediately understand and just experiment a bit
