Contact legal aid centre and ask about a "similar circumstance" and ask what the legality is. They can't pass on your info the the feds because there is no info, but you can get at least a vague idea if you have any rights to salvage or finder fees.
>>
>>378322371
no, he gutted the hardware and placed it on carpet. He then put in low-end components worth 1/5th of the price of the tower. He then wiped the drive because 'nothing was on it' (when in reality he just couldn't read the files that were there) and used it for his shitty build

Like you'd be able to find a buyer who would offer that much, you fucking donut.

What are you going to use the source code for commercially anyway, a brood war clone? W e w. Plus, because it's all done under the table, there'd obviously be no legislation protecting a buyer if you'd stored a copy somewhere which you could later upload for the general public on a whim.

Having said that, him handing it back to blizzard was all self-interest. He might as well have just dumped it on the internet anonymously. I mean that's understandable because it was the only zero-risk option but it was still a missed opportunity.

When I found it and decided I didn't want to pay for a case. Apparently there isn't much info about these and only 50 where ever made, they where kept under the table but some got out so you can find the occasional forum post about it."

I looked through his posts
>it does but here's the deal the reason there is nothing on there is that the hard drive was reformatted by the previous owner this means everything got wiped regardless, even if it didn't I still have the hard drive so its not like I saw it and thought it was a useless box and got rid of it, all the original parts have been "safely" removed and are just not in the original case. edit: oh my god this one is on you, go through my post history and then ask yourself is this dumbass smart enough to reformat a hard drive
So assuming he's telling the truth, what's the big deal?

Actually consulting with a lawyer more or less made giving it back his only option.
>man finds property that doesn't belong to him
>considers making a quick buck by selling it but doesn't have the right connections
>"hold on," he thinks "I should ask a lawyer whether I should do this obviously illegal thing I'm thinking of doing for monetary gain"
>lawyer gets involved
Now he fucked up.
>"of course you can't sell it legally you fucking retard, it's not your property"
>and now someone else knows he has it
>"I guess I could leak it. OH WAIT not any more because I just made myself the prime suspect if that were to happen"
>"better take what I can and give it back"
>>
>>378322283
Why should he have to risk landing himself in jail and having his life ruined for copyright infringement? So that a bunch of neckbeards he's never met or cared about could get the source code for a 20 year old game?
>>
>>378323758
Regardless of any other options he had, there's no way there was any sizable amount of profit in this for him.

>try to sell it or release attached to his name
>go to jail

>release it anonymously
>maybe some custom game type shit gets made that could have probably already been made in WC3 and probably was made in WC3
>probably some unofficial bugfix type stuff that the whole 100 people still playing BW will appreciate

>return to blizzard
>get some free shit from them

There's nothing of value here beyond the curiosity of seeing Starcraft source code.
>>
>>378324194
>leaked a Wii game

yes, before it was officially released which is different from the situation we have

now do you seriously think any video game company would care about a 20 year old game's source code being released?

and even if he was afraid of legal action, he could still hide himself with say, tor and tails. no company is going through the trouble of tracking a person down and paying legal fees for that shit
>>
>>378324478
Assuming that the previous owner did just a normal format and not low level format, it would be trivial to restore the files.
>>
>>378324608
>"not any more because I just made myself the prime suspect if that were to happen"
Lawyers that stay in business don't give out client information unless you live in some 3rd world shitholes where the lawyers, the police, the judiciary and the deathsquads all work on the same corruption racket.

>>
>>378321887

>>
>>378325235
If you walk into a good lawyer and start saying "I'm thinking about kill-" if they don't stop you and tell you that they don't have client confidentiality in cases that related to crimes then they're not going to be in business long. They're going to either be in prison along with the idiots they helped for conspiracy or shot by some gangster or his mates.
>>
>>378325216
But if he was found he would still face fines and shit.
You all just want somebody to risk his butt but you would never do it.
>>
>>378324789
Not quite. It is true that lawyers have a responsibility to not reveal information relating to the representation of a client. However, a lawyer DOES have a duty to reveal such confidential information to the extent the lawyer deems necessary to prevent the client from committing a crime or fraud that is reasonably certain to result in substantial injury to the financial interests or property of another and in furtherance of which the client has used or is using the lawyer's services.

>guiz we can port it ANYWHERE with this
No you fucking can't, especially the desired platforms that are turfed by google and apple. Unlicensed, commercial code poisons any project and any attempt to load it into an app store will just get caught by automated scanners.
>hurr durr just side load it
Have fun soloing the campaign.

There isn't any value in an old engine like this that has been hacked to bits anyway. There might be some novelty value of rooting around in the code and finding some whacky comments or silly code, but that's about it.
>>
>>378325483
Right but that's not exactly contrary to what I was saying. The dude tied his own hands by admitting to a law firm that he had come into possession of a piece of intellectual property that wasn't his.

If he bought from some bozo that didn't care and did a sloppy format, then it would be possible that the data could be recovered. If he bought it from a tech savvy vendor or user, then most likely the harddrive was government wiped, meaning the chances of recovering the data are ridiculously low.

>>378323312
>crying over bog standard PC components
This is all stuff you could cobble together for cheap from a 1999 computer fair: mid-range GeForce 2, bottom end NIC, winmodem-grade USB adapter card, slot CPU, mobo with one of those disgusting riser card slots above the AGP 1.0.
>>
>>378327035
Data recovery programs get too much credit. If the old user had wiped the drive chances are he already had overwrote most data anyways.
Recovery programs aren't all that they are hyped up to be, they can only recover shit that wasn't overwritten.

Option 1:
>try to sell it on the internet/deep web and risk getting scammed, will have to prove somehow the disk is legit while at the same time avoid getting sued by blizz
Option 2:
>release it for free for the ebin Starcraft community, full of shitposters you don't care at all about and risk getting sued by blizz
Option 3:
>give it back to Blizz and get a free trip + free shit

It's a no brainer really, why would he go out of his way to 'share' this with you faggots? I wouldn't risk a papercut to save you from dying kek, why would a risk a lawsuit or even waste time uploading shit for you?
>>
>>378321949
He destroyed them and threw them away because he could not find anything on them, as he thought it was formatted.

Little did he know, he simply did not have the correct programs to read the data, and even if the thing was formatted, there are still tools he could have used to at least get the FUCKING SOURCE CODE from it, which in turn is what would have led to the Xbox emulator finally becoming at least usable.

Not to mention that there was more than likely old coding for the Beta and Gamma versions of Halo and Gears of War on the drive, which would have been a beautiful history piece to preserve.
>>
>>378327147
Yes, data recover programs would really only be equipped to handle "lolwhoops" deletions. Commercial drive data recovery would be able to get most, if not all the data if the drive was only lightly formatted. Where the hell people expect to raise the massive amounts of money needed to get that high grade data recovery done is beyond me.

I'm more surprised that whoever was selling it just didn't say "fuck it" and drill a hole through the drive out of sheer laziness.
>>
>>378327157
I'm pretty sure it's more that the guy was praised completely unnecessarily for doing something that, as you've pointed out, was entirely in his own self-interest.
