LoS1 is great but didn't feel at all like a Castlevania to me. LoS2 tried to bring in more Castlevania elements but managed to fuck it all up somehow.

See >>378318753

LoS1 was a decent foundation but felt disconnected from the CV series proper. The trailer made it seem like they were going to improve things by bringing in more CV elements like a more gothic setting, other characters and a more "opera" like story.

The sequel was ok until the end where they went with the most anti-climatic piece of shit ending I have ever seen in a video game. It alone ruined a somewhat mediocre game to become absolute fucking shit. You don't get to fight Satan and you kill him using a fucking QTE. I felt dirty for playing it.

The only other issue was the shitty stealth sections, but I could forgive that because walking around in the old flashback castle was amazing. The environments were beautiful and the gameplay was completely fine.

But that fucking ending. It ruined everything. Every god damn thing about the game. And I hate that Mercury has so many extremely talented artists, modelers, texture creators and programmers, yet all their work is dirtied by Sonichu levels of writing. I sincerely hope those who worked at Mercury who actually did a good job decided to go somewhere else with their talent, because the writer hacks certainly don't deserve to sit in the same office as the real talents.

The combat is better in the second and it doesn't drag as much. Other than that, not a massive improvement by any means. A lot of the backlash at release came from the sections that turned Dracula into a bitch hiding from armed guards, which isn't as bad as they made it sound, and how boring the modern city is in general.

I will always want to punch the guy who thought Gabriel's fall was a good story direction. How in the hell does a guy who literally invoked the power of God to defeat Satan and then saw his wife's soul ascend to heaven turn evil? And like 2 days later, at that!

I can understand wanting an epic, shocking twist, but mother of fuck, you need to at least TRY to justify it in the plot.

>>378325781
I'm really just referring to the instance of non-LOS Dracula collectively as Mathias in this case, since as far as I can remember there really isn't another origin story for him that Lament of Innocence retconned away. But that's really beside the point, we never saw Gabriel actually becoming corrupted or seeing his faith in god break, he remains pious to the very end, he BURNS SATAN AWAY WITH FAITH, only for him to next game suddenly be treated as this horrible demon lord who, oh wait, ACTUALLY STILL ONLY WANTS TO DO GOOD AT THE END, EVEN IF HE'S A BIT GRUMPY ABOUT IT. Meanwhile we could very clearly charter a course for Mathias, from having his faith in God broken by the death of his first wife, to having his second wife whom he very clearly loved killed by witch hunters and cementing his hatred for humanity even further on the character. Even if you think his introduction wasn't the best, other games redeemed him enough.

>>
>>378325914
>Curse of Darkness was an upgrade from Lament of Innocence.
To each his own, I suppose. I found pretty much everything about CoD utter garbage- the drab locations, nonexistant level design, small/uninteresting enemy roster, sluggish character movement, garbage gaiden plotline, difficulty consisting of wearing you down fighting endless hordes of enemies throughout endless, same-looking corridors, out-of-place underdeveloped ID shit.
Crafting would have been nice if the game hadn't been so much of a slog- made the grinding unbearable. The music was OK by itself, but the more bombastic tracks would get annoying at times (and it really dropped the ball after Eneomaos, although the final boss track was great). Boss fights were cool, I suppose.
I even played CoD before LoI so I wasn't annoyed by all the recycled content. Probably wouldn't have made it through the giant-ass first level if I had played through LoI first.

>>378325972
I found his hitboxes to be pretty bullshit (although consistent with the rest of the game). It's a nice boss in that pretty much every move of his can be handled in a way that leaves him open for a few hits, but getting to the point where you can do this flawlessly (and you'll need to if you're playing on the hardest difficulty) takes a lot of trial and error.
Fuck the minigames/QTEs between phases though. Those are inexcusable.

Yeah if you refer to the OG Drac as Mathias I do agree with you. SotN handled him well and the other games were content with having him just be evil, which is completely fine for a videogame about good fighting evil.

It's just that LoI handled Mathias in such a garbage way, he just shows up and uses the magic thingamajig to become super evil and shit. You don't see him becoming corrupted or having his faith in god break either, he shows up and he's a giant fucking asshole and he doesn't ever drop a hint he was at some point not a giant fucking asshole. It's about as subtle as that 20-fucking-minute long cutscene before fighting Satan in LoS- both games leading you to one expected ending (kill Walter/Patrick Stewart) and then doing a 180° when it's way too late for that because hey, we can't lead into the rest of the games this way.

>>378328682
They did have a proof of concept trailer with Simon and shit, which leads me to think it was at some point in its early stages thought of as a potential CV entry, then repurposed into an unrelated game (which I believe is when all that shit about Aghartha came in), and when MS got told they could actually make it a CV game after all they scrambled to have it resemble one in some way.

This boss was the only time I felt like it was a Castlevania game. Heavy amounts of trial and error and required you to be on your toes the entire time.

Best fight in the game and best experience in the entire Lords of Shadow trilogy.

Oh shit, time to play as a villain, conquer humanity and commit atrocities with the Belmonts trying to stop you!

Thanks for fucking nothing, what's even the point of being Dracula in such a scenario?

A fucking rat?!

1 and 2 are OK games. Just DL the demos and try them out. The only things you can't infer from the demos are 1 having some puzzles sprinkled in to break up the pace (some have you use your abilities to navigate the levels, others are completely unrelated shit like playing barebones chess), and 2 mostly doing away with that and throwing in some awkward stealth rooms (awkward in that most of them are actually puzzles and you're expected to "solve" them by using your abilities in a very specific order). 2 also has interconnected maps a la Metroidvania, while 1 works with a linear, chapter-based structure. Both have you unlock new abilities throughout, which you can use in earlier levels to get stuff you couldn't reach before.

Avoid Mirror of Fate unless you really need to get that Lords of Shadow fix.

>>378330405
Sadly I have to agree. 2 had a lot of well-designed bosses that would have been a lot of fun if you weren't so fucking overpowered. Not even editing a New Game save to start on Prince of Darkness from the get go (and then avoid power ups) fixed that. (It does, on the other hand, make some of the bullshit enemy encounters towards the end even more bullshit.)

>>378331179
Tbf for a 3D "Castlevania" just being mediocre is a massive fucking accomplishment. I would argue that it definitely isn't mediocre at least re:grafix and soundtrack, but I'm aware both points are very much a matter of opinion (the latter more so).

You're right, I completely forgot about those sections. Also:
>Random robot dude is a bigger threat than Satan and his acolytes
Great game design.

These fuckers are somehow powerful enough to enslave the entire world.

Also their models looked like they were ripped from Quake or something.
>>
>>378331975
Quake just has good understanding of the same source that 40k uses for Daemons in armor
>>
>>378331572
Dracula being able to turn into a rat pack is par for the course. It's one of his things.
Only really becomes an issue when that's the only thing he can turn into.
>>
As mind-numbingly dull as LoS was, that last cutscene was pretty cool.
>>
>>378324150

Dracula has some massive balls to sleep in that hanging tower.
>>
>>378324150
Not even remotely, and I recommend you abandon any and all delusions of Castlevania ever coming back and being good. Ever.

Show looks pretty good though.
>>
>>378329581

But the biggest problems with LoS were the setting and the story having next to nothing to do with existing Lore. Both of these things can r conveyed in a cinematic trailer and this did just that.

Then they shit the bed.

Is the Forgotten One the same creature you come across in the basement of Lament of Innocence?
>>
>>378334507
Nope, not at all
It shares the name and the basic theme [ancient powerful as hell creature sealed and forgotten inside an old castle] but they're nothing alike otherwise.
LoS' Forgotten One even talks to you, and he sounds like a vaguely knightly honorable sort, telling you to get the hell away from his prison and not pick a fight with him because he's going to escape and destroy the whole world anyway and he's way out of your league
>>
LoS2 was pretty bad, but I feel like people make it out to be worse than it actually is. The gameplay is definitely an improvement, with different weapons, moves and magic. Hell if you forgot about the modern day sections it would actually be good game

Satan and Leviathan's designs are absolute garbage by the way
>>
>>378333968

I think his design is pretty great at showing the distance between him and the present time's regular, butt-ugly demons. He's like a relic of a time when demons actually had reason to be proud. He doesn't use a weapon, because nothing is stronger than he is, anyway.
>>
>>378318148
Is it at least a decent god of war clone?

I'm not picky about it's "Castlevania"-ness but I like the art direction

If he wasn't damned in his original quest, he absolutely was when he became a vampire to stop the ancient evil awakens. He'll never get to see his wife again.

Course he had no choice but God is really a dickhead in that universe. Gabriel had a hard life.
>>
>>378331572

Dracula literally pulls those moves in Bram Stoker's novel. It's not the ability that's bad, if anything it's just consistent. It's how it's implemented in the game.
