DMC4 did this the best of any game where you fight "yourself." In each one Dante is shown to still be the better fighter, but in the first fight he's so overconfident that you manage to get the upperhand, and in the second he's just messing around so that you can calm down.

That being said, I've always hated fights in games where it's revealed the boss doesn't actually want to kill you in the fight but if you don't "beat" them in-game they kill you anyway.

I loved that shit, but it only worked offline which is garbage. If you had online turned on you always just fought some random asshole's Arisen. Partially the reason I made this monstrosity is so that it'd ruin the cool epic fight at the end by revealing itself.
