Pretty much any DPS class once Stormblood launches. Everyone will be busy playing the new ones.

Honestly it's all balanced. There's a big disparity in endgame raiding, but for everything else you'll see every class here and there. Maybe Machinist is the rarest?

Now that cast times are being removed from Machinist, what's the point of even having Gauss Barrel as a mechanic? The whole pros and cons of GB originally was you get extra skills to use, increased damage but you gain cast timers. With the cast timers being removed, why would you ever not have GB equipped now, for what reason. Just get rid of GB entirely and stop shitting up my gun aesthetics.

Assuming you're not just here to be an annoying piece of shit, not many classes play particularly well before you get past 30, some classes even past it.

Pugilist/Monk is the only class/job that almost immediately gets its core 'concept' - Greased Lightning an a 3 step rotation. Classes like Bard learn its shit by 30, but doesn't really come into its own until 48 when you get Bloodletter, and then 52-60 changes vastly more.

I tried Pugilist first and then Mage a few years later to see if the game had changed enough to be enjoyable after years of patches.

Nothing at all was changed 1-30 as far as I can tell. The first dungeon was still just a long corridor. I liked those little instances where you fight 1 boss and then it's over but it's immersion breaking to just teleport everywhere with 4 other randoms, kill something, then teleport back.

Farming wolf marks is incredibly easy. If you do the front line roulette you get like 1750 even if you lose. Regular front line is 750 for a loss. The Feast gives like 200-350 for a loss. So you can suck shit and lose every match and still get a decent amount. Queues can be a little long depending on the server and time but not unbearable.

For a full Garo set its like 18000 which is just a couple of days of farming if you go hard.

Yeah 1-30 hasn't changed much outside of being made drastically faster via experience being ramped up. You don't really need to do too much outside of the story quests and mandatory dungeons to reach 50.

Pugilist gets its core GL and 1-2-3 rotation by like level 8, and builds steadily from there - you just get more Greased Lightning, and as your gear gets better your GCD gets lower, so you're eventually goin pretty fast and you learn stuff to weave in between GCDs. It's a pretty smooth and fun class to stick with, and ends up being pretty easy because it doesn't change its rotation every 10 levels.

By contrast Black Mage is the total opposite, you're basically stuck in incredibly static and boring rotations until you reach specific levels, then your rotation changes completely, not even really feeling complete until 38 when you learn Blizzard 3. It legitimately feels like shit until then, and doesn't really feel complete until 50 when you learn Flare. And then in 52-60 it changes its rotation/point yet again. It's a whiplash class.

As for the general pacing of the game... I'm not gonna defend the low level stuff. I feel like it's paced so that complete newcomers to not just MMOs but videogames in general can slowly, SLOWLY learn everything they need to succeed, and as a result if you are at all used to the genre it just feels slow and weird. I feel like it doesn't really feel interesting and make you really want to continue until 34 when you fight Titan in story mode (a Trial, like you mentioned, they're kind of the absolute high point of the game due to presentation).

As for immersion... It takes a backseat to convenience I guess. I'd say give it another shot and go a little farther with PUG, but obviously that's up to you. It's not all smooth sailing past 30 (2.x expansion patch quests fucking sucked, for example), but it does get better.

MNK in general has shitty weapons, I want what I'm using to actually match the animations.

Claws don't work at all, anything you hold with handles and then extends outwards with no comfortable grip/arm brace attached to it looks stupid. Gloves are the only thing that works and makes sense for the animations.

Patch 3.2 added the only decent MNK weapons in the game, Sephirot fists, Midan Knuckles, and the Ifrit tomestone weapons. I hope SB adds a craftable version for Sephirot fists that you can dye and have leaf particles.
