They updated it to work on newer version of Windows. Have fun with the atrocity that is GWL.

Download one file, xliveless, and copy paste it into the game directory. Done GFWL garbage problem solved. Just don't expect to play online without it.

Didn't need to download anything myself. It installed GFWL and I created a local profile so no need to register or anything. Just finished it a week ago or so, and it was a first time install on this computer.

Run it on Linux.
WINE is really good at playing poorly optimized Vista era games. On Windows I get 30-40 FPS in GTA 4, but on Linux I get a consistent 60 even in really dense and populated regions of the map.
Fallout 3 and Oblivion also have better performance on WINE. The only drawback is installing mods is more difficult
