Yes they do, or some do at least. Old games don't look good because they had one or two good artists, they look good because they would have at the very least 10 artists all working together on nearly every image. Final Fantasy 6 had at least 16 artists working on it and the majority of them worked on the environments.

It plays differently from MS, but it scratches the same itch.

It's the only indie attempt of a MS type game that's actually good.

It adds length, because the #1 complaint about indie games circa 2010 was "wow this is so short!". Thus the roguelite genre was born.

Unfortunately indie games aren't really developed because the developers have a story to tell or want to build a portfolio, they're just as subject to greed as AAA games, and it shows when you have steam descriptions for games that are just blobs of other game names.

"A metroid-inspired castlevania SOTN typed roguelite with elements similar to rogue legacy!" is literally a description for a new game. I shit you not.

Also working on a metal slug would require at least 720p sprites unless you blow up the 480 image. Personally MSX and such still look great when I boot them on the Wii.

Like I did before, indie artists just dont have the skill for them and as another anon said they're usually filled with shitty RPG mechanics to make up for good game play or level design.

The last MS was 7/XX and though it kinda felt like a mash up rom hack it still played a lot better than every indie attempt.

Thought in this day and age I would love if it was just 3D models on 2D backgrounds but keeping the cartoony proportions and animation.

No matter how you cut, people would rather spend $60 on the newest early access open world survival thing than $20 on a pixelart arcade game focused on gameplay.

I mean, the only pixelart game that I can think of that has "made it" in the last years is Terrari and that's because it is an early access (not anymore) open world survival thing.
