It was never ultra popular and it was made back in 2012. There's still dedicated players on it though. I wouldn't exactly consider it dead. There's still a decent amount of people playing it.

Yeah that game isn't dead. It's not as popular as it was back in 2013 or so (mainly cause nearly everyone who played mc back then is in their mid teens) but it's still quite active. Servers are still up and running and it is still pretty popular. The community is a lot more autistic though so watch out.

It creates an even deeper sense of immersion when you think about roguelikes. In those you typically descend into the earth trying to bring back a treasure that has claimed countless lives. Playing some obscure one or a not en vogue one it makes it feel like the challenge is so insurmountable that it has scared everyone else off. It makes it meta. Too bad its usually because the game sucks.
