This is the exact same thing as for example a happy meal. Trends and timely brands sell and even more so when they're limited editions. On the exact same level as cups, hats, t-shirts etc. We are more likely to buy something we have an emotional reaction/link to.

90% of the game is about rolling dice and buying whatever the fuck you land on until you get some monopolies going.

If you want to play a classic game of trade at least play Catan which ends much early than Monopoly
