It just hit me. Yoshi P has been talking about how he's wanted to nerf SCH's "damn fairy" (to use his words) for ages now, and after seeing the tether, I finally get it.

SCH's fairies are no longer going to auto-cast heals constantly. The tether ability that SCH is getting will allow them to continuously heal one specific target unless otherwise changed by the SCH. That way they're not nearly as OP, SCH's fairy abilities get minimized somewhat, and SCH actually has to resource manage their fairy.

It makes sense now. Yoshi P is nerfing the shit out of SCH.

Of course I had naysayers telling me that it was slippery slope fallacy but clearly it wasn't. Being able to buy near max level characters is inexcusable and will be a mistake in the long run.

Nothing about this expansion strikes me as exciting and I don't even have the slightest bit of hype. They aren't breaking their formula to try to do something exciting or interesting, they're just making what they already had even worse, while siphoning more money for less in return, and this is supposed to be their highest budget expansion yet, with triple the budget Heavensward had.

I have 10 silver chocobo feathers from RAF. I leveld my MNK to 50 and plan on doing the rest as SAM when SB drops.

If anything, having the fairy NOT healing the party is only a buff. HoTs and aoe heals are more than enough to manage any partywide damage. Even Rouse+Dawn+Illumination is more than enough to handle any raid-wide damage, outside of 12S Almost Holys, without even taking into consideration the Scholar itself or the other healer.

A fairy healing a single target that's not the tank is also largely irrelevant, as most of the time when a non-MT party member is getting hit by the boss, its by a mechanic that will kill them regardless.

The job gauges are going to radically change how many of them function.

Many job abilities getting merged/cut. This will cause a new shift in how rotations are performed, even ignoring the brand new skills.

A complete rehaul of the cross-skill system.

Parry being changed to Tenacity, a completely new stat.

It just sucks that not all of them were hits. Frontlines in 2.3 and PoTD in 3.3 were both massive successes, and genuine improvements to the game that offered new gameplay that is actually fun and exciting. I personally believe Frontlines (save for Shatter) is one of the best off-pieces of content they've ever released because each game is different and large scale PvP is fun.

On the other hand, you get some obvious duds, like Diadem and LoV. Still, that's where you're going to see the most change from this game. Expecting a total system revamp is unrealistic, and I don't think anything of the sort is coming until at least 5.0 or 6.0 when they rework parts of the system to completely ditch the class mechanic.

The possibility of implementing class mechanics that can't be tracked on a buff bar is a pretty big change.

RDM's dual-gauge system would have been nigh-impossible to track using the game's current status bar.

SAM's Sen system would also be difficult to parse given that it consists of three non-sequential buffs.

Skills like WAR's Release the Beast thing are only possible if the UI element that tracks how much charged resource you have is fine-grained enough that you can divide the numbers by two and still get something that makes sense - doing it with stacks using the current UI would be difficult.

DRK's meter actually makes even more use of that granularity, with the gauge rising in increments of 3.

Hell, AST's card mechanics were already seriously stretching the limits of what could be done with the status bar as your only UI, making you track which card you have drawn, which card you have spread, with distinct icons for each, plus a separate icon for your Royal Road, and all of those mixed in with other buff icons that are just party of AST's kit as a healer, plus any party buffs, etc. The new UI makes that stuff immensely easier to parse, while adding even more mechanics to the system.


This is all to say nothing of the fact that a lot of classes seem to have been practically redesigned from the ground up, particularly BRD and MCH, or that standardizing class utility with the role skills allows them much more freedom in their encounter design to make use of certain mechanics that used to be impossible for certain party compositions to deal with.

If you want to see an expansion where combat is "essentially the exact same shit", look no further than ARR to HW.

Well, the good thing about the 2.X patches is that they were all self contained stories with some continuous things going on in the background, most of the shit that started in the patch usually ended with it.

In Heavensward shit can start during the expansion release or during a patch and only end more than a year later with the source of the problem suddenly coming back from left field, long after you stopped really caring about it since it was okay to forget about it for several seasons.

It made most of the patches actually feel like they were cut content from the original expansion or 3.1 more than being real new things like in 2.X, worst case being 3.3 since Nid was the focus for half of 3.0's story.
There was nothing really new introduced, the only "new" thing that was introduced post 3.1 that had some importance was the "obviously not Illbert" leader which you could say, only closed up the story of the end of 2.5 and the start of 3.0.

I accept they had value for DPS who couldn't just summon a dungeon party on command, but fates as a whole are awful design, and 20-30 minutes is not a huge ask of players. This is by going over PvP information, watching stuff and hearing stuff. Here's what I think will happen.

There's 3 types of buffs.

Blood of the Dragon
Crimson Dragon
Dragon Eye (Stacks, maximum of 4)
Jump and SSD procs Mirage Dives. All 3 skills give Dragon Eye Stacks, only if you're under the effect of Blood of the Dragon.

Dragon Eye IV appears to be a traited buff and/or can be triggered via one of their Skills. Full stacks of Dragon Eye IV gives a Damage boost.

Geirskogul has a 35s Cooldown and can only be used under the effect of BOTD or Dragon Eye IV. Using it converts your BOTD into Crimson Dragon, which allows you to do Nastrond (Red GK).

Geirskogul is 220 Potency

Nastrond is around 300 Potency

Frontlines was at least fun up until Shatter. Secure and Seize breathed life into PvP the way that Wolves' Den and the Feast never could. XIV's PvP as a whole feels really clunky sometimes but you never really notice that when in Frontlines because it's so large-scale and because there's usually some objective on top of killing other people.

I think they said they're making Seal Rock 2 but we'll see.
