MG2, MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 are essential.
MGS4 is shit but essential to finish the series's story (even though it ruins it)
I haven't played the others but Peace Walker bored me so idk do what you wanna do.

Oh and definitely play Metal Gear Rising. It's barely related to anything but it's an excellent game in its own right.

After the series peaks it rapidly declines to an ugly end. If there' s a better series or a series you're more interested in, go for it, otherwise the metal gear series is worth a play.

I would say emulate MGS: The Twin Snakes on gamecube to start out. The ps1 version hasn't aged well and it might be a turnoff to new gamers

then go to MGS2, 3, and then V: Ground Zeroes+ The Phantom Pain. You're better off watching 4 and Peace Walker on youtube
