Because even though he's so fucking nuts he actually manages to be sympathetic by virtue of how pitiful he is.

If Squeenix were writing, Goro's turn would be treated like the most dramatic betrayal ever, with the whole team utterly oblivious to his stupid fucking deception. It would have landed completely flat.

Instead, it's obvious from the start. Everyone knows Goro's the killer from the moment he joins the team, but they let him do his thing anyway, even pretending to be his friend. And for his part, Goro does a great job pretending as well. The shit he pulls in the casino heist is legitimately impressive, and the team wouldn't have been able to proceed without his help. Despite the fact that everyone is lying to each other, you get the feeling that Goro really could have been a Phantom Thief if he wanted to.

As far as villainous redemptions in video games go, it's the best one I've seen in a while.

His tragic background doesn't justify his actions in the presence, if anything he's much more of a complete idiot when the game pretty much forces you to think "GAIZ HE IS SMART DETECTIVE BECAUSE I SAID SO".
The sympathetic aspect stops being relevant when he never feels ashamed of killing innocent people for his own selfish and stupid motives, not to mention they're literally "muh daddy issues". Everything else in the game doesn't need an intensive background of Jap knowledge to understand (and I fucking started reading manga since I was 6) while this faggot's 'muh bastard child' stands out like a fucking sore thumb.

I was actually on the other end of the spectrum; I was looking all over the place for people to betray me (since the game says you've been betrayed right away), so I didn't trust Goro, Sae, or even Makoto at one point (there's a scene where she talks to her sister and I was sure she was gonna warn her about us due to guilt).

It wasn't until the team revealed how they knew Goro was bad that I could trust Sae and Makoto again.
