easiest would be to softmod it with FMCB, but you'll either need another chipped(hardmod) ps2 or someone with FMCB installed on their memory card.
Another way would be to get one of those magic swap discs

You know p3 and p4 were both release on ps3 right? Hacking a ps3 gives you access to ps1-ps3 on one hdd versus ps2 which has a shoddy laser and slow usb for external hard drive support.

Also there are fmcb that can be purchased on amazon and ebay, basically under $10 to soft mod the ps2

about the compatibility, FMCB doesn't run the games, another homebrew like OPL actually loads the game and you can see the compatibility list here http://sx.sytes.net/oplcl/games.aspx .
If you know or can find someone who has FMCB, then you can ask them to just copy it over to your memory card

I think i'll try to solder in modchip then. My PS2 slim don't have HDD bay, USB 1.1(?) is probably way too slow for games to run as well as from DVD, and i enjoy having stack of pirated disks instead of some nasty lan fileserver/games on hdd anyway.

The PS2's ethernet interface just isn't fast enough. If you ever get FMV cutscenes they'll end up stuttering. You're better off burning DVDs than using SMB.
