As someone who's since played 2 and 3 and enjoyed them both, do the controls/mechanics of 1 still hold up compared to the sequels? Considering getting 1 on steam wen it's cheap.

I refuse to finish it until I beat Manus with my melee build.

One time in the dozens of hours I played it.

The key to beating this game is having a flexible build that can use multiple types of gear and attacks. Some places like blighttown require a high stability shield and armour, since you cannot move around, while some bosses like O&S, Artorias and Sanctuary Guardian are much easier if you are highly mobile and roll around.

Oh, and use firestorm on the phalanx squad in the painted world to farm for souls.

No, I don't think I'm gonna either. I love the aesthetic of it, but I'm just too much of a causal. I don't mind a little dodging, blocking, and/or parrying, but having to do it for almost every enemy, and do it right or get killed in as little as 1-3 hits is both not fun and infuriating.

I just beat the mini-boss before Darkroot Garden the other day, the thing that shoots lightning at you. After dying maybe a dozen times to its seemingly random jump attacks and tail swipes that absolutely shouldn't have hit me because they literally didn't connect with me, I ended up standing behind a rock and shooting 60 or so large arrows into it.

I pressed on into the garden, only to get one-shotted by this big knight. Tried again, figuring I'd just stay away from the night, and instead I got raped and knocked off the cliff by a gang of Carnivine and they're Vine Whip.

Shit's just not fun to me.

Technically, if you have a huge greatshield as big as a truck and a lot of levels into stamina, you might be able to block one or two attacks from big and endgame tier bosses but really it'll leave you nearly no room to counter attack them and it'll be a miserable way to play.

So yes, you will get to a point when you'll only block some attacks, especially fast but weak ones and dodge super slow but devastating ones from bosses.

Started Dark Souls early this year, finished Dark Souls 3 last night (except morning really).

I finished the game/DLC around 2AM, or so I thought. Went and checked the guides in case I had missed something major, and turns out I hadn't found the real Darkeater Midir boss fight. Didn't go to sleep until 6AM...

Dark Souls 3 was great, and I especially thought the ringed city was fantastic from a level design perspective. Out of curiosity I went back today to try Dark Souls and maaaaaaan, the controls are just clunky and slow as all hell with insane delays everywhere, especially the rolling. It's almost like playing a turn-based game in comparison.

Once you are good with iframe rolls all souls are easy as fuck, compared to other games the gap seems quite large so it's very easy to master. BB on the other hand is really fast and you end up just going in more often and tanking, Nioh on the other hand you can cheese with a bunch of tactics but one on one without any cheese I feel it's harder to dodge and is a more patient game looking for those small openings it kinda feels like a fighting game how tight it is.

Quite a few times. Got 100% and SL1. The easier of the series in a way, but the 3rd game has left me too grown of the more fluid movement options.

Kind of like you. Played and beat 1 and the DLC. Got to the final boss of 2 but stopped. Never did the DLC. Playing 3 but a wife and kids makes sitting down and just enjoying playing difficult. I like the level and enemy designs and characters and atmosphere of 2, but the combat mechanics and bosses are so fucking rubbish and bring the whole game down.

Both 1 and 3 feel much more fluid and organic; sometimes enemies charge, sometimes they deliberate, sometimes they move in and attack and then back off, some shield types turtle around for a while. Bosses are also more varied and fluid and not 100% predictable in a similar manner, sometimes leaving windows for several hits or circling around for some breathing room.

Meanwhile in 2 the combat is so damn rigid and mechanical and head-on you can practically see the algorithms at work. Every single fucking enemy encounter is always all the enemies immediately charging at you, swinging relentlessly until you or them are dead, and all the bosses are just roll, roll, roll, roll, attack once (and ONLY once or you are OHKO'd) roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, attack once, roll, roll, roll etc.

I quit after trying the part in your picture a hundred times. I found out later you can just run through but by that point I was done with it.

I got maybe 90% of the way through dark souls II and probably a little more than half way through the third one. I'll probably keep playing ds3 eventually. The problem I have is that the games are a little bit too hard. It just takes too long to train the muscle memory to beat the bosses for me, so I progress too slowly for it to keep me interested.

Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin - Avoid as your first game because it's a bad first impression

Bloodborne - a faster paced game. No relation to the other series

Everything in these games is 100% patterns, from the enemy placements in every area to their behaviours, range where they'll aggro you etc. Same with bosses, sure there's rng on all this but once you see something enough times you learn to deal with it and knowing what you'll encounter beforehand due to going through an area enough times is how you'll progress.

I get you though, no git gud and other toxic bullshit from me. Dropped 1 for almost 2 years and only managed to get into the general mindset of these games last year. Got 3 yesterday and I'm honestly more than willing to co-op the whole thing since I've nothing to prove and wanna have fun. Maybe you could try co-op with a friend as well.

Fallout 2 is one of my favorite games, I've beaten it at least 5 times, but that's since what, 1998? So around 4 years average between playthroughs. Not hard to do, use the medallion item to soak his dark spam attack and get some armor to hold some of his aggressive combo attacks. If your beating up too much, summon sif. It was glorious when i beat him full melee on NG and Manus is a worthy opponent for the build.

I had to beat him on new game+ though because I missed the DLC completely the first time around since I had no idea the game would overwrite the save immediately after beating Gwyn (thanks FromSoft.) Don't know if it made a difference, maybe I was overleveled at that point.
