I honestly can't think of many times in Arena where I was really hungering for debuffs, since buffs normally take care of pretty much everything you can want. Maybe if you want an alternative playstyle, sure, but I'd still hedge towards Lightning Breath for general utility.

Her Atk is 2 lower than it would be with Dark Breath. She isn't hitting nukes either way, but the loss of that minor bit of Atk is well worth the Distant Counter. Her Res (21) is actually pretty decent in conjunction with her Speed (34) especially when you add in skills and stat spreads into the mix (potentially 40 Spd and 24 Res with +Spd Fury 3), which is more than enough bulk to safely bait out the vast majority of non-Blade mages.

This is the general guide:
When you start the game, spend all the orbs they give you at the start rolling characters. At the very least, get one good 5* unit (there are shitty ones) or two if you really want to go that far. If you didn't get any, reroll.

After that, you should practice some constraint when spending orbs or you'll run into a drought without any like 75% of the population is facing right now.

Play the arena. Your highest win streak up to 7 wins is your arena score for the week. Losing units deducts from your score. Using bonus units doubles your score.

The entire game can be beat with entirely free units given the proper strategy. There's actually a dude on youtube who plays only with free units.

Oh, and upgrade your starter units. Those are Alphonse, Sharena, and Anna. Alphonse is dubious but Sharena and Anna make good units if you invest in them.

Honestly, this is really the main downside of it, and even that can be avoided a lot of the time with careful positioning and placement. About the only other thing to worry about is someone you don't OHKO/ORKO having Close Counter and Vantage after they attack a DC FCorrin, but that's largely limited to dumb whales. Lowish damage aside, she still makes a pretty good baiting tool and wall on the player's end with DC for the rest of your team to sweep in and deal with.

You're going to want to save 3* with really good skills. Off the top of my head: Hinata (Fury), Hana (Life & Death), Selena (Reposition/Triangle Adept), Palla (Moonbow), Nino and Odin for -blade tomes and draw back/moonbow, and any others you think you might need for a unit you're already have and plan on working on. Otherwise, you can just send 'em home.

You might wind up with a situation or two where a previously seemingly useless skill would've worked great with x, but unless you want to invest in box space, it's better to get rid of them now and trust you'll get more 3* in the future.

It's an alternative unit, so chances are good that she would have something other than a staff while her normal unit has a staff. Just like the Easter units all have non-standard weapons.

The 3* pool is, iirc, quickly becoming the smallest pool in the game, so being the most common and few means you'll be seeing those units fairly often. I'd say, if you have multiples, keep like 3-4 at max, unless you're good on box space, in which case don't worry about it, just let them sit there until they become SI fodder or feathers.

Nino is actually a pretty solid 5* to have. Gronnblade is a super strong weapon if you have units with buffing skills like Hone Attack/Speed or Fortify Def/Res.

Also, to your original question: I've only upgraded two units to 5* and I've been playing since launch, and only one of them was to actually use on a team. Most of the time, 4* can get the job done, unless you're on the bleeding edge of the arena.
