Explain to me /v/ right now, why you haven't played this game
>>
>>378234191
I have. The engine and TECHNOLOGY was good 6 years ahead of time.
>>
I've never heard of it
>>
>>378235014
PC-exclusive survival horror game with real time shadows and lighting and cloth physics in NINETEEN FUCKING NINETY NINE.
Also had great soundtrack and sound effects that were so popular and recognizeable they became one of the most used stock effects, still used in movies and TV series to this day.

Watch this and you're bound to recognize some of this music and effects, this is actually where they come from.

>>378234191
Never played Nocturne but I played a couple of those Blair Witch games, which were built on the same engine and even had that same guy as a side character. Those games weren't great, but I remember being real impressed with the cloth physics and shit at the time.

Also the .exe for the Blair Witch games was just Nocturne.exe. I always thought that was kind of funny.

Great game. Shoddy as fuck, though. There are many stoic badass characters out there, but the Stranger always stuck with me for some reason.

>dat feel you can infer he's a much more dangerous person than just some special agent working for the government

Shame no sequel was REALLY a proper sequel.
>>
>>378235201
Is the Windows Movie Maker filter and frame rate original, or did the faggot just add that himself for his channel?
>>
>>378235898
it's an old game. at least it's not quicktime.
>>
If anyone is curious, just found a good enough documentary about it:

>>378235596
>>the dark souls of persona
Wrong Nocturne.

>>378235898
Original, it's deliberately Hammer Horror-tier campy.
>>
>>378235835
>Shame no sequel was REALLY a proper sequel.
The first Blair Witch game is literally a direct sequel.
>>
Where can I obtain this game?
>>
>>378234939

fixed camera
>>
>>378234191
I wish there was a continual narrative in the game instead of couple of "campaigns" because they were seriously not created equal.

>Dark Reign of the Vampire King
Probably the best one with a nice twist and not a resolution you would expect.

>Tomb of the Underground God
Second best and it was great to see the more mystical angle. I mean, beside vampires and werewolves.

>Windy City Massacre
Dogshit and I trudged through it barely.

>The House on the Edge of Hell
Divisive and I found myself both hating it for the goddamn "puzzles" yet liked it for the premise and just the idea of the setup.

Also, that chilling epilogue. Sequel never.
>>
>>378236169
>fixed camera
The only way to make survival horror work without being walking/running simulator like Outlast/Amnesia/Soma/other trash.
>>
>>378236201
>Game story that has "Episodes" of different scenarios but a over arching mysterious main character.
That sounds anime as shit.
I'm downloading it as I type.

I have no idea if it's going to work on modern PCs, but it's the usual survival horror tank controls package except much less puzzles and more action. Amazing atmosphere, too.

also in case you're wondering it support controllers and my xbox one controller worked fine.

It's in free domain, literally abandonware because Terminal Reality died and nobody bought the rights so it became public.

Only in controls, more or less. Nocturne has different priorities and if you can get it running right without visual glitches it really stands out as technological marvel.
>>
>>378237470
The only similarity is fixed camera angles, controls while operating on "tank control" principle are really different than RE.

Pretty sure some of those music stings were used in Trespasser, which came out a year before Nocturne. I think games in the late 90s/early 2000s just bought from the same stock music pool.

>>378238535
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocturne_(video_game)
>The sound is also very detailed. The soundtrack of Nocturne is public domain music and has made appearances in other works, including the hit NBC TV reality series Fear Factor, the 2002 Japanese movie Returner, and the E3 2007 teaser trailer for Resident Evil 5.

I have since I'm an old fuck and I loved every bit of it.
I wish GOG would release it, I would buy it in an instant since afaik it doesn't run on modern systems.
But it's also one of those games where the IP rights seem to be in limbo like NOLF's, so we probably never get a proper rerelease.
I could be talking out of my ass though.
I only know it was developed by Terminal Reality - which are no more and co-published by Gathering Developers/Take 2 and Take 2 are colossal kike cunts that couldn't give less of a shit.
>>
>>378238680
That just means they used license-free music, not that the soundtrack reverted to public domain and was then used by other works afterwards.

Here,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX_Thlc39YQ&list=PLD85FF378289B6D36&index=39

That soundtrack was composed by a guy named Bill Brown in 1997, who was probably just playing around with a bunch of stock music and adding pan flutes to make it sound more like Jurassic Park.

I'm sure if somebody wanted they could research and find out the real origin of the music used in that trailer you posted, but I can't be bothered to. Regardless, Nocturne looks like a hoot, so I can understand why someone would get defensive over its legacy.
>>
I have.
I did not really like it. Fixed camera + bad controls + combat-heavy gameplay did not click with me.

I mean technically it was super impressive, and the theme and atmosphere was good: it had style and a lot of work went into it. But gameplay-wise, it just wasn't very fun. It felt like the player is battling the game more than the enemies.

I think this is actually a fairly common complaint about games in this genre (which does not really exist anymore, for I think these very reasons).

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong because this is just my impressions, but to me Nocturne followed the tradition of Alone in the Dark - which also spawned Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises (plus some more forgotten games - anyone remember The Devil Inside?): and I think this genre really was fundamentally flawed. SH survived based on the strength of the narrative alone, RE - I'm honestly not sure how that became such a popular phenomenon, but it also did need to completely reinvent itself to remain relevant. Rest of the games, like Nocturne and The Devil Inside were forgotten entirely - and I think the main reason why they did was that they sold themselves more like action games than as horror games or horror comedies (in case of RE).
When you think about it, it's actually a clash of an attempt to create a cinematic experience but also marry it with a gameplay that just does not fuse well (and proving that taking inspiration from Cinema has been a problem for gaming since the dark ages, not just modern issue).

Looking at this video, >>378235965 and remembering how fucking COOL the premise of Devil Inside was, it makes me sad though. I remember even back in 1999, I just dropped those games after a few hours: watching the vids and reading about them makes me realize how much cool stuff and effort was put into them. They were not lazy, they were genuinely joyful in fact, but the very format or genre just sabotaged them.

Well, that is my impression at least.

Also, didn't The Stranger from Nocturne have a cameo in one of the Blair Witch games?
And weren't those games like unbrearably awful?
I remember Blair Witch 1 getting a fairly negative reviews, but BW2 was considered a fucking travesty in our media at the time. It was made by the people who made Rune and Prey, so no surprise there.

>Also, didn't The Stranger from Nocturne have a cameo in one of the Blair Witch games?

Because first Blair Witch game was a sequel to Nocturne featuring one of the side characters. Basically devs just used a recognizable name at the time to make a more adventure-heavy sequel. Bloodrayne is basically knockoff Svetlana Lupescu because devs couldn't get the rights to make another sequel.

Interesting. Never knew the series was this interconnected. I do remember the review for one of the blair-witch saying that the best part of the game is when the player is saved and then utterly schooled by The Stranger, who then says basically "you know what, fuck this noise" and walks away.
