Doubt I'll ever play ps2 or 1 games on it ever again though. Everything's getting remastered anyway

Open it up and clean the fan. Don't do anything else. That should give you enough time for it to function to backup your save data.

If it's backwards compatible with PS2 discs, yeah, RIP that was the good model.

>>378236556
packing millions of transistors into a smaller and smaller chip increases heat massively, and each time you use the system the components are going through a massive heat cycle from room temp up to 100+ degrees and then back again. It's an enormous strain and it causes the solder joints to fail. The vast majority of failed units came from a failure of the interface between the chip and the motherboard, not the chip itself.
Not to mention moving parts (i.e. disk drives) inevitably wear down, even if they were made from titanium.
>>
>>378234167

It was probably so cheap because of the YLOD.
>>
>>378237108
it will recognise it but also force you to format it.
Once a HDD has been used by a PS3 it's tied to that PS3. You can browse it's files on a pc but when a PS3 gets a new HDD it won't use it until it's formatted.

bit of a misconception about the 80gb ps3's software emulation...

The original fat 60GB ps3's had the full PS2 hardware inside, CPU and GPU. The 80gb model didn't have the PS2 CPU and it was emulated in software on the cell, but it still had the full PS2 GPU hardware, exact same as the 60gb unit.

whether or not the company is profitable doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of their products.
Besides that, most sony divisions are profitable again now. They also do a lot of non-consumer business. For example look at the camera on your phone. There's a good chance sony manufactured that sensor.

Removing backwards compatibility was a mistake.
If I could go out and buy a PS4 and have it run all my Playstation games I would have bought one ages ago.

There's only a couple of PS3 games i really care about, and they're basically all available for the PC now.

Why the fuck don't sony, or any console manufacturer for that matter, just make it super easy to hack their console?
They could put all the DRM they like on the games but then just make it so we can install unauthorised apps or have an other OS option again, so we could have emulators.

Imagine a console with sort of 'unofficial' emulator support like that. It would be a fucking huge selling point, even if piracy of the system's native games was impossible

80GB is hybrid. Has the PS2's CPU and the PS3 emulates the PS2's GPU. That gives it B+ rating with PS2 backwards compatibility. Digital PS2 Classics work on every PS3 console because Sony altered the software emulator to do both the PS2's CPU and GPU.

It went from PS3 having hardware emulation of the PS2 to having hybrid emulation to having pure software emulation, but that pure software only is available if you buy digital PS2 games. The PS1 emulator has always been software emulated on the PS3 and the PS3's Bluray was never fucked around like the PS4 so every PS3 console can play PS1 discs without a single issue. For the curious, Sony removed the wavelength on the PS4's Bluray lens to make it cheaper to produce, making it fully incompatible with CD-Roms. That is why your PS4 cannot play music discs and it thinks PS1 discs are alien software.

The other way around you dweeb. RSX just can't emulate GS properly without help and that's why they had to either keep it inside or ditch the BC. Cell doesn't have any issue emulating EE+IOP. The PSN titles are patched in order to work properly.

Emulate. Alternatively, at least for PS2 you can get component cables and force 480p output instead of 480i with GSM. It doesn't work well with a lot of games as they mostly used half pixel offset trick, therefore forcing it to output 480p will actually result in a halved resolution but it's worth giving a shot.

To be honest, I still don't see why there has yet to be a CFW installer for any firmware version; they know how to create keys, so there should be no issues creating a signed firmware installer that simply installs a hacked firmware out the box. >>
>>378253440
I seem to recall a few years back that someone created a signed homebrew app for psp, but it never got any real exposure and was little more than a proof of concept. so while i'm sure there is more to it than simply creating a compiler that matches up all of the checksums to the new signed key, i have little doubt that it is doable. and in the end, i'd have to lean toward muh sekretklub and muh brawginrites than the difficulty of creating an authenticator.
>>
>>378253958
if you do it all in one go, probably.
Try to prioritise the most important saves first.
Don't bother using the data transfer feature, on older ps3s the file system is so fucked up the data transfer almost always fails. Installs in the "game data" section are fine to let go, you can just install the game again on the new system. The actual saves are in the "save data" folder and shouldn't be more than a few hundred megabytes total.

mine spends most of the year collecting dust, probably the only reason it still works

How reliable are the slims?
>>
>>378254320
How do you transfer just the saves?
>>
>>378255029
Send it to a USB. If you're retrieving the saves on a different PS3, as long as the PSN account is the same, they'll keep unlocking trophies.

Dying PS3 or You Sold a PS3 but backed up saves to a USB
On your new PS3 log into your PSN account, put the USB and retrieve your save data
Trophies work, everything keeps working
Backing up PS1 and PS2 saves isn't a big deal and is self explanatory

The only time to panic is if the save data is copyright protected. Then you have to do a full system backup which takes forever or pay Sony jewgold for Playstation Plus to send the save data to the cloud and then retrieve it.

most reliable model by far. Of the slims I've heard the CECH-25xxA model line is the best but I don't know why. the slim is basically a more efficient version of the fat, the super slim is where they really tried to save money and compromised on quality.

put in a memory stick, go to save data folder, press triangle, copy to USB, select all
>>
Fucking Sony. The fat with PS2 hardware would have been an incredible machine if it lasted.

Very reliable.

it also eventually warps it so that it's permanently fucked.

Super Slim isn't horrible quality, hardware on the inside is cleanest motherboard. It's just noisy as sin if the Bluray drive is used a lot. I would recommend a Super Slim over a Slim just to have the peace of mind that it's the most compact and shrunk electronic components (CPU/GPU/Fan) and is going to be reliable in the long run.

Not that I'm shitting on the Slim, it's just you'll be buying second hand. Getting a Slim brand new these days would be stellar.

check cl for someone locally, that'll reflow it. if the cpu/gpu does not have to be reballed, you can probably get it dome for as little as 30bux. tho if you have it reflowed, you can do away with that nasty rohs solder.

Right after my fat 60gb died I bought a slim. It still works years later with no issues. It hasn't been babied at all and still gets thrown into a bag, lugged around for fight nights etc.

Can't say anything about the super slim though. It felt cheap when I tried one.
>>
Can you hack a super slim model?

I just use my normal slim with a case fan mod so I dont YLOD my shit up

We had signed PSP homebrew since the very early days, but I think I know what are you talking about. Can't find the details right now, but I'm fairly confident that deriving a key from a signed title like he did (if that's what he did) isn't as simple when it comes to PS3.
>>
So what's going to happen to all my digital PS3 games when there are no more working PS3's?
>>
>>378256032
Buy backups then. 3.55 systems sell for like $150 now
>>
>>378255870

Most DCs pretty much read burned games, right? Are you talking about SD card mod?
>>
>>378256178
SD card or IDE drives with g1 ata or dreamshell

But yeah most dreamcasts play regular burned cd-r's but not all

You can tell by the sticker under the console.
