Honestly it wasn't that amazing. The thing that got people hyped about DA:O was the potential; it was the first mainstream isometric-ish CRPG in a long time, even if it was mediocre on its own. People were hoping that they'd improve for the sequel and turn the franchise into something truly special.

Can't remember. It's the one where you come out of a side room and enter a large one with columns and that woman with the 2H sword is there with like 6 others. When you lose (like you're suppose to) you get locked in the dungeon and have to escape. I managed to beat her.

I had Morrigan AoE the NPC's while I tanked the main woman. Morrigan and Wynne or w/e died. It was then just me + Lelianna fighting the 2H woman. Every hit she did 40%-50% damage to me. So I positioned her so Lelianna could dual-wield backstab. I chugged potions and managed to kill her. You get her 2H sword which is a weapon you should have already got BEFORE this.

You can then leave the room and you avoid the entire dungeon escape part of the game. However they patched it and put a 10 second or something cool down on potions, so you couldn't chug them. I think if you went tank spec (I was 2H DPS spec) you might be able to do it if you get lucky, but it might take ages if you lose your party members.

No. I started playing DAO again last week and beat it for the first time since 2007. God damn is it boring. I don't know why 10 years ago I was able to put in hundreds of hours in the game but now I can barely stay away. I had to put in the skip battles mod half way through my playthough because I couldn't take it anymore. I'm in Awakening now and the expanded spells/talents/specs make the game a lot better but still, it's it's kind of boring. I'm playing an Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Battle Mage and all I basically do is walk into combat and toggle passives on and off.

I'm going to try DA2 for the first time soon and I'm actually looking forward to "awesome button" gameplay. Is it really that bad, gameplay wise? I've seen enough over the years to believe the hate towards the story and writing but is the combat actually significantly worse compared to DA:O?

Also how did they manage to make Oghren go from mediocre party member to downright awful in Awakening? He becomes another 1 dimensional "muh pussy" party member like Zefran and never shuts up about it.

I've played the game as every class and spec combo in Origins. They are all overpowered and boring dogshit, except for Archery. And Arcane warrior in Origins is absolute dogshit damage-wise compared to a dual wielding warrior/rogue and has mediocre control compared to a normal mage. I didn't know how the balance would turn out for Awakening but considering how I've built my party members, it's pretty much the same as it was in Origins except with more buttons to press.

I didn't mean you let go for the entirety of the fight dumbass. I'm saying that watching your character auto attack with the only input from you being walking behind your target does not make for fun gameplay. And really, Nightmare isn't that hard once you're around level 10+. By the time you've got the levels to make a lightning fast backstab build you've hit the point in the game where difficulty starts leveling out.

So? You said that playing a backstab rogue makes the game more fun. Controlling other party members is something you have to do no matter what, it's not exclusive to playing a rogue so its irrelevant to whether that particular spec is fun or not. And with enough tactics points, you really shouldn't be switching back and forth between characters for most encounters.

I had hundreds of hours in DAO when it came out. I've tried every combination. They are all trash. I know exactly what kind of interactions you're talking (protip:shatter combos are not rogue exclusive) and its still boring. You're greatly overemphasising the tactical depth of the game when even on Nightmare, the vast majority of fights can be handled by AI and smart use of tactics. In fact, the lack of tactics slots is pretty limiting as I could probably make the game play entirely by itself if I had the slots to do it.
