If you don't mind all that many jumpscares, Cry of Fear is also worth checking out if horror in dilapidated urban surroundings is your sort of thing. The game that came out before it, Afraid of Monsters, has far more jumpscares if I remember correctly

The House Abandon is a nice short atmospheric text game, but they later released it as part of a full game called Stories Untold. I think House Abandon is now only available as a demo for Stories Untold. I feel that the rest of the game didn't really live up to the spook expectations THA set up.

The original Dead Space (BUT ONLY THE ORIGINAL) is a decent atmosphere ACTION game thats basically a blatant RE4 clone in some ways. It's definitely more action than horror, but has great atmosphere.

I didn't know that expert mode makes it an even better game

I used to kinda dislike cragscleft and now I love it.
Same with bonehoard.

Most people hate on it, but I really liked Doom 3 for its sound design and the atmosphere it creates. Especially in the early part of the game.

The lighting coupled with the superb auido make for a really creepy experience, especially when you play it with good headphones.

Also recommending Scratches. It's a point and click game about an author who buys an old mansion with a dark past. He decides to look into the house's history when he starts hearing scratching coming from inside the walls at night

That's because back when Thief was released it was developed for PC, which had dedicated soundcards that were able of creating great sound.

Nowadays games are created for consoles and people play them on TVs with shitty speakers, so developers don't bother with creating good audio.

Thief deadly shadows was fun back in the day.

It's kinda like being in the theives guild in TES but with less free roam exploration. Not that it's a bad thing. Open World games are kinda overrated imho.
