Was Battletoads the first ironic hard game ever made? Wasn't the lore that the 3 nerds got sucked into their own fucking impossible to beat game and had to take the roles of the fucking toads and they morph their bodies because they're hacking the fuck out of the impossible as shit game world or some shit. I remember there being a one-off comic laying out that shit for some weird reason.

That sounds like the plot to the old cartoon pilot. As for the game, I remember hearing somewhere that the devs never thought the game was hard enough, so they kept tweaking each level until the level felt challenging. However, the final game was never playtested or balanced.

I'm glad you're a god at vidya, but that statement is objectively false. The snow level is brutal unless you already know the level layout and have the jumps ingrained in your muscle memory.
The level after that isn't too bad but you can get fucked near the very end because of the RNG that controls the whirlpool movement.

Rare is dead, and today's common Xbox owner has no desire to play something so cartoony.

It was in the June 1991 Nintendo Power that dropped with the games release I think. The backstory comic makes it extremely clear they knew the game was obnoxiously difficult and the assholes just didn't give a fuck anymore. You can read the entire synopsis of it all on the wiki. It's strangely detailed for such a stupid gag of a game premise.
