TL;DR: You get a few heroes from the original roster for free, everyone else is locked, you can unlock them all for the price of base game + all 3 expansions. Or with in-game credits at a relatively low, but not horribly low gain rate. Each hero also has to have their kit unlocked by levelling that character up 3 times. If you buy the set, you get all their kits automatically fully unlocked. But not the stuff beyond their kit unlock levels. Grindable (and buyable) characters with buyable cosmetics. Standard F2P.
Gotta level a character to unlock their full shop (12 is the max, everything is unlocked at level 3 which only takes a few wins). IF you had them before F2P, their full shop + killing spree is unlocked from the get-go.
If you owned both DLC's (Starstorm + Overdrive) you get automatically upgraded to the all-'nauts pack which gives you all characters free for life.
If you only owned 1 DLC you keep all those characters.
If you only owned vanilla, you have all vanilla characters unlocked (even if you hadn't unlocked them in the old system) provided it was before the transition to F2P (now game keys only unlock Leon, Lonestar, Scoop and Froggy G).

I use Homing on Clunk's AA. It makes him harder to poke at close range.
You can always go for his hyper-burst build (+damage, 4th missile and double-missile-shot after hitting explode/bite), but I find that's harder to use against people who know stay out of your face.

It's basically a ripoff of Hi-Rez F2P games' models. You unlock a currency from playing, you then use that currency to buy characters and maybe a few cosmetics are thrown into the mix for you. You can then buy the all character pack with real money so that Awesomenpoints essentially have no use anymore beyond a few mediocre cosmetics.

Unlike Hi-rez games though, there's no premium currency to unlock the cooler skins. I find this to be actually worse because there will never be points like what's going on with Paladins right now where they give you some premium currency (crystal storm weekend) for playing a few matches, or you don't get premium currency for logging on every X amount of days. All Awesomenauts has is the regular currency and then you have to spend real money to buy the good stuff.

Raelynn is free is you use someone's referral code, the most noob friendly character in the game
Gnaw is the most annoying motherfucker in the entire game, with a strong team he can secure the battlefield and make his enemies hide near their towers.
Leon+Lonestar+Coco+Voltar(wtfman) are also pretty good.
Those are the most reliable characters that i'm aware of, though i haven't played for a long time , there may be some nauts i haven't seen much of yet, who can make a significant difference aswell

Deadlift is great, but he can't do much on his own except bully some characters in early game. Cause despite his size and HP pool, he's not a real tank. His defensive ability is primarily for slowing down poke, but is obliterated instantly if an enemy uses any multi-hit ability while you're packed together. He's like a reverse Skolldir mechanically.

You unlock their upgrades by level 3, which is a couple of matches with them. It's kinda pointless but it's at least easy and much better than the original system where you unlocked individual shop unlocks by leveling your account. It depends on the situation really. Sometimes it can feel like over kill and may not be necessary, but it really does add a rediculous amount of damage in general. You just have to keep track of what missle your on to maximise the extra damage.
