Not played Dark souls but have played this and I've got to say, after having been recommended it so heavily by /v/ I was sorely disappointed. I managed to platinum it in 10 days, despite being told how challenging it's meant to be.

I hope you realize Soulsborne is just a gutted, over-budgeted King's Field. Miyazaki didn't direct anything in the KF series, but beginning with Demon's Souls, he had set out to create a spiritual successor to it. And he failed at this task. Although people seem to like Souls on its own merits, it most certainly does not replicate the creative genius of KF on any level. Souls nonetheless owes its existence to KF and From's prior directors.

If you want a real successor to KF, try Shadow Tower. There's one for PS2 as well, although fan translated.

Shields aren't always going to save you, and they are essential to any good fantasy setting.

Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2 would feel so boring if they relied on constant invincibility frames to the same degree that Bloodborne does, due to being medieval fantasy.
