Decided to replay one of my favorite games, after not having touched it for a few years.
The first time I played HL2 I thought pic related was a pretty one-dimensional villain/coward who was overly concerned with self-preservation. Now that I'm playing it again I'm starting to think he did literally nothing wrong. Was I right before or now?
>>378196880
I'm pretty sure he convinced the Combine to not wipe out humanity by saying they would be useful or someshit.
What exactly did he not do wrong? At the end he implied he was going to use Eli to get a better deal out of the Combine but that's all I can think of.
he saved earth
He's the hero of the story
Gordon destroys everything
He tried to make Gordon Understand
childhood is idolizing gordon, adulthood is realizing breen makes more sense
Fucking half life thread
Can anyone give me a REAL reason gabe hasn't made HL3? He obviously has the money and the staff for it. Is he too lazy or is he scared it won't sell?
>>378197347
It would never meet expectations and they don't actually have a reason to because Steam makes them unlimited money.
>>378197446
I just want to know what fucking happens after Eli dies
>>378196880
His actions had a sound logical and ethical basis in that he started out wanting to preserve humanity from immediate extinction by arranging a marginally preferable inevitable extinction in the form of vassalage. However, his decisions were ultimately villainous because he persisted in maintaining the status quo of inevitable extinction even in the face of those who were acting to arrange a scenario where no extinction at all was necessary. Whether he believed that he was in the right by opposing the rebels because he didn't want to risk the possibility of immediate extinction by angering the combine, or if he just genuinely enjoyed the power he had come to wield, is a matter of debate, but the fact of the matter is that he was in the wrong because the rebels were the only ones who actually had an alternative option to extinction.
>>378197669
>Eli dies
>you get stuck inside a room while an NPC tells you about how Alyx is sad
>>378197823
>game opens with a ten minute long helicopter ride to show off the new engine
Half Life 1 >>> Half Life 2
>>378197763
But that's not true. The Combine offers immortality (via uploading of consciousness) to citizens who serve them well, supposedly. There are several copies of Dr. Breen floating around.
>>378198192
Breen said something about being transferred into a host body but after he blew up all you saw of him was prerecorded messages.
I don't remember anything about the citizen thing, all they ever did was gut people and turn them into cyborg slaves.
>>378197347
Valve's structure is completely retarded. If there's no one calling the shots, that means there's literally no leadership. Nothing gets done.
>>378197347
because source 2 is almost ready, and they arent going to release it on source 1
>>378198909
they already dumped source 2 on dota 2 and nobody noticed. i think all the vr shit is on source 2 too.
>>378197347
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50lSIaSR3zc
This explains it pretty well
tl:dr, there's no financial reason to
>>378197986
That would be just fine if it's Adrian's chopper.
>>378196880
Is >bad guy did nothing wrong babby's first meme or what?
>>378199056
>dota 2
wow it's nothing.jpg
>>378199749
maybe but remember how much they tried to hype the original source engine, showing off techdemos and shit.
meanwhile source 2 just gets dumped on an existing game in an update and nobody cares.
>>378199056
they arent just using source 2 for 1 game.
>>378196880
I suppose that Breen helps perpetuates the horrific state that humanity is in, but can make the argument that subservience is preferable to total extinction.
But the moral debate is awkward, because Gordan's a violent mute who can't argue against his point to any degree beyond using brute force.
>>378197347
Bc the actual developers at valve, those who are not the ones working on dota or tf2 hats have left the company since they didnt want to work on only the aforementioned
Valve is creatively bankrupt but Steam will always pump enough money into the company for them.to be able to continue their esale monopoly
Once a better platform gets made Valve will die since they are literally not a game dev company anymore, hl is dead and so are hundreds of anons who were waiting for its release
what do the symbols around their neck mean?
>>378198909
I noticed it when my fps dropped from 60 to 20
>>378200425
>nobody cares
Plenty of people hated the source2 update because it was a straight downgrade of the client which served only to introduce a nu-male intern designed web2.0 shit of an UI, break all modding that remained after Pumpkin trees and increased the hat advertisements to cover 85% of the main menu
>feel like replaying half life fairly often
>always play 1 then get about 70% of the way through the 2 before I just stop playing for some reason
it's been years since I launched episode 1 or 2, I don't even dislike them I just don't know why I lose interest
>>378201514
It means "courage."
>>378201514
Hieroglyphics. They're scarab grubs.
Half-Life's lore is so fucking retarded.
>>378199160
>>378197347
>muh financial reasuns
retarded
The real reason has to do with the stagnation of technology, the "wall" we've hit. Half Life was never about making money, Half Life was never about the game itself, Half Life was always about making a glorified tech demo. HL1 and HL2 were fucking revolutionary. There has been since no massive jump in tech. Valve was banking on VR but that ended up being a gimmick.
If the day ever comes where they can revolutionize the industry again and Gabe has not yet had a heart attack, we might see it. But god knows how many decades thats gonna be.
>>378201879
what was the jump from hl1 to hl2 though? both were 3d, both had physics, both had pretty much the same things besides maybe facial animations and slightly more realistic physics

reminder
>>378196880
>Combine is the way to go said Breen
>Combine just destroy shit to use it as resources to make shit like Citadel or Stalkers
>Breen was about to get teleported into another body
>Advisor bodies act as the containers for the mind, just a bag with everything removed and replaced with mechanical parts for minimal interaction
>>378201308
>implying they do significant work on dota2 or tf2 hats
>>378202019
Gravity Gun and its attendant physics changes. The disintegrator shot from the rifle could not work in HL1. Car, or more generally, vehicle physics. Cars were a joke in HL1.
Episode 1 was about introducing a dedicated AI companion that wasn't useless.
>>378197763
that's fair he's villainous because he's risk-averse
>>378198013
Not in conceptual grandness.
>>378202316
>conceptual grandness.
hl2 was massively cut down from the original concept. they didn't redo it or anything they just cut out massive chunks of the story and rewrote what was left so it worked. this is reflected in the pitiful amount of weapons and enemies the final game has.
>>378202019
Better friendly AI/companion AI(bugbait, squads)/enemy AI (elite guards) gravity gun/physics interactions/gravgun, lighting, facial/character animations, in game cutscenes, water effects, dynamic lighting and materials effects were all points of improvement
Marphy black has some good videos on the AI stuff and the CS:S benchmark is a good example of the graphics stuff

Who Gman works for?
What Vortigaunts plan to do?
Are Vortigaunts enemies with Gman, do they have different goals?
Is Gordon in cahoots with Gman?
Is Borealis even important, it was in beta ater all?
Why the soundtrack is so good?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2vnJhva0MQ
>>378203434
>Are Vortigaunts enemies with Gman, do they have different goals?
They stole Gordon from Gman and keep him from interfering with what Gordon is doing. They pretty much just want to fight against the Combine because they were previously enslaved by them
reminder that you can hear children laughing and playing when you pass by the playground the first time

>>378204242
Reminder that "Radio" exists.
>>378203954
Well Vortigaunts want to be free
Combine want dat local universe teleportation technology and resources
Gman lets Freeman get rid of Nihilanth (good for humans, vortigaunts and Combine) and get rid of Combine in City17. So Gman doesn't work for Combine at least?
>>378204418
It has a nice sound
