I fell for the VR meme and I love it. 170+ hours on Onward and about to hit 50 on Pavlov. I pretty much have endless hours on Vivecraft. Can't wait for Fallout 4 and Payday 2 VR to end my social life.

I would definitely say I got my money's worth but I already had a VR ready rig to begin with.

Maybe you should wait for new hardware/ price drop.

Onward and a lot of the other shooters currently on vive are just one man indie trash games. You should look at the higher quality shit like Cosmic trip

Honestly, nothing even comes close to VR shooters. Ducking and dodging out of cover is a workout and feels like airsoft at times. Games are fucking tense. Hiding from a hail of gunfire actually feels like you're doing so.

>>
>>378185507
Honestly I don't know about that, VR can be immersive but it's nothing amazing unless you are easily impressionable, on the other hand kb + mouse is still the superior controller while VR works great in space games where you use the flight joystick but outside that VR itself doesn't offer any new form of controlling your character within the game nor anything new or innovative worth the hassle over "standard" controls.
>>
>>378185812
The only thing that's a bit away is for the dev cycle of AA+ VR games to end.
They rushed the hardware to the market before devs had chance to code.
And of course it still isn't for the mass market because the hardware itself and what is needed to run it still isn't widespread.
But from what the things can do, at the moment, we are already there.
As long as you aren't a SOA fanboy...

I bought an hour on one at a local VR arcade and I've been thinking about it since. I intended to just shell out a few bucks to try it and get the experience out of the way, but I'm probably going to end up shelling out and buying one anyway. It's a long way off from being a replacement to video games and all the issues I thought I'd have with it are there (the controls being untenable for proper games for one), but it's a fucking amazing little thing in its own right. It'd be worth it for the HS porn alone.

I don't think it's a meme. What is a meme are the controllers that come with the system and the assload of tech demos. The best VR game currently are racing games that just werked with it. Why? Pavlov alone is worth it to me and it's a shitty unity asset flip. The second the AAA game releases in VR (three of which are supposed to launch early this year) people are going to be up-selling VR everywhere.

It's a shame /v/ has to hate everything because this is something that still has that cool small-ish community where you aren't being bombarded by normies constantly.

>>378190227
Children are absolutely hated in VR games and get kicked/bullied to death almost immediately. Most games will ban your account if you keep letting your kid play, and if that fails you can always just execute the little faggot yourself.

The VFX-1 was actually usable on its time of release with adequate displays (for its era), accurate motion tracking, and even a gimmick controller. It's main problem was that it cost $600 in 90's money, which is a fortune in today's money.

Name one game that has a crouch button that isn't a modded game like doom 3 or minecraft.

I haven't played a single made-for-VR game with a crouch button, because that makes no sense.

And no, steam VR does not calibrate your height. it does not care if you are a manlet, it cares where your headset is in 3D space. Only certain games use your height, and they decide how it is measured. It is usually your HMD height or they measure the distance between your HMD and controllers while at rest and calculate it that way.

The only thing you install are drivers (throught steam or viveport) and install SteamVR. It is obvious you do not have a vive and are just talking out of your ass like a fucking clown.

The vive software literally NEVER has you set your own height. You set the height of your virtual monitors via the controllers and that is is.

In the multiplayer games its mostly to show your model crouching and limit your walking speed because you are crouching.

Nope, and yeah, text is a bit iffy. What do you mean by SDE? I'll be back near the rift in about 20 mins so I can check whatever that is. Also, it feels like the minimum lense distance ( 59 mm ) is borderline just not small enough for me, anyone else seem to have this issue?
>>
>>378195854
>anyone else seem to have this issue?
Yeah my vive doesn't go below 60.9 or something and it feels UST barely off. It's not a huge issue though. SDE is the screen door effect, the black lines between pixels you can see if you look close enough. I just wanted to know because i read e-books in VR a lot while smoking my pipe and it's hard to read unless i turn the font WAY up.

The real mystery here is why /v/ thinks things that don't or can't go mainstream are bad. Have you seen this board recently? We're the cheerleaders of everything non-mainstream. Sure, VR is probably never going to get big enough for your mom to check it out (no, your fucking phone doesn't count). However, the community will stay small and close-knit and everyone involved will genuinely enjoy the technology and want to share with each other?

Did you want this to turn into League of Legends where you're playing every game with three toddlers and your friend's dad?

Vr should remain a toy for the rich and every future game should launch with cross-platform play so the rich can use their superior motion tracking to sexually assault the poor players.

I thought the pixel density was a hardware statistic? Are you talking about supersampling? I use 1.8 for reading but i have to keep it on 1.2 or 1.4 at most for games because i'm still using a 980.

Most games have 2 basic VR quality options - Pixel density and Supersampling.
They aren't the same.
Pixeldensity is what you want to crank up to battle screendoor effect and blurry text.
>>
>>378196537
I don't think it will be. There's a number of reasons I can think of as to why:

>motion controls encourage standing up more than a gamepad, and it's a horror game, which increases the chances of people hurting themselves
>the engine was already built for the gamepad in mind, aiming is tied to the head
>game would be piss easy then (it's already easy)
>still incredibly fun even without motion controls
>>

>Pixeldensity is what you want to crank up to battle screendoor effect and blurry text.

That and munchkin were huge for me, and I'm also DMing a D&D game with an old crew I used to play with. None of them have VR and I'm just fucking demolishing their pieces and markers when they die. It's fun stuff. Little things are really making it that much more enjoyable.

Also i'm glad I went with the rift, now that the touch controllers are out. oculus store is gay but there are still plenty of games that work on steam with OR.

>>
you'd need to hack your vestibular system to get around motion sickness
>>
>>378199370
That's nice and all, but would literally do nothing for VR since there is no depth perception with only one eye.
So putting a holoscreen before one eye would be useless, you'd need to plaster the wolls of an entire room with that at best - and than those facescreen sound pretty practical.

>>378199475
You can just train it, or do you still get sick from car rides?
>>
>>378199370
This wouldn't work, at all. Not for VR. It would make you sick in an instant. The way they handle depth perception is the rendered image on the display is technically rotoscoped. Each eye renders the same image but an offset is applied depending on your IPD. This offset creates depth.

You can see this offset yourself without a VR headset, it's the same way human eyes work.

Lol what? How do fucking birds work, if they have eyes on the different side of the head? It's called accommodation and it is one of the main mechanisms of depth perception.

>You can just train it, or do you still get sick from car rides?
During car rides you have inertia forces giving feedback for your vestibular system. In VR you are "moving" while staying still. It's still works okay with vehicle simulation games, since you are supposed to be stationary in your cockpit, but for everything else it's just shit. That's why VR is suitable only for plane/car or mecha sims, but retarded marketers try to push it everywhere else. Stationary shooting games like firing ranges are an exception.
>>
>>378180836
The problem isn't VR is "absolutely TRASH", it's that it isn't worth the money for a good VR headset---not to mention it still has quite a ways to go before it warrants being a "must purchase" item.

I'm not a poorfag, but there are many other things I'd rather spend my money on than VR. I could buy it for porn alone, but I could also buy a hooker. I'm sure fleshlights are awesome, but it's hard for me to spend money on anything that relates to porn and/or jerking off.

>That second thing
That doesn't change the fact that after a little training most people will be effected significantly less by motion sickness in VR

What is this, the great pseudoscience shitpost bonanza?
>>
adaptation to particular simulations can occur with most people, but or some they never adapt, and the rate of adaptation varies when adaptation is possible. adaptation in this case entails experiencing the symptoms of sickness, which in the context of a video game means playing a game to make you feel bad. you also have to adapt to the particular simulations, and if you spend any significant amount of time away from the simulation, then you will have to adapt all over again. this is also complicated by how similar the simulation experience is to real world experiences that you have, with increased real world experience increasing the effects of sickness, since you have adapted to the real system and the simulation is wrong.

your monitor simply does not encompass enough of your field of view to induce the effects

you should also recognize that this also reduces the effects in proper simulators where you have stationary visual artifacts and simulations in which motion is projected upon your entire visual field

It's hard to explain but seeing things in real size is a mind blowing experience. The thing that really blew me away was The Lab; seeing ATLAS stagger out and realizing just how fucking huge he really is hit me hard, and then GLaDOS drops down and her face plate alone is six feet tall and the rest of her stretches out into the distance- I was intimidated in a way that I was not at all expecting. VR gives a sense of proportion and scale that nothing else can match. Technically, a cave troll in a LoTR film is 20 feet tall when you see it in on a theater screen- but it's a different thing when a cave troll is standing in front of you and swinging its club and marching toward you and you have to look up because the fucker is 20 goddamn feet tall. Playing HL2 and moving across the bridge is tense when its on a computer screen, but it's fucking heart stoppingly horrifying when you're actually looking down and seeing a 100 foot drop underneath the spindly little support beam you're standing on.

maybe because you have to render the game twice at 90fps
>>
>>378207446
They really don't... yeah i know, it's still fine but ultimately your experience suffers because you can't crank up video settings.
Try to look at 1.8 pixel density setting with 1.2 supersampling - it will be a slide show for you but the image quality will be worlds apart from the default quality you are gaming with atm.
>>
>>378207665
Because you're running two displays at a high resolution (people only complain about it being "low resolution" because it's an inch from your eyes, it's actually quite high compared to a standard non-4K monitor), and you have to run it at 90FPS. There's also a bunch of post processing that you must do to warp the image so that when it's warped by the lenses it'll look normal, although that's negligible compared to the other shit.

Vive sucks, I own an Oculus and the Vive controllers are absolutely ass compared to the ergonomic pleasure handles that are the Touch controls. That alone is a definitive case for the Rift over the Vive. 20g of pressure for holding items on the Touch controllers vs 180g of pressure to grip items on the Vive controllers. Yeah, so completely ass that game developers switch the grip to the trigger buttons on a lot of games because Vive owners cant hold down the grip button for any extended period of time. Fucking dumb.

>lololol i'm 12 and motion sickness is a meme

Sadly it's not. Our inner ear, our balance "system" is literally our sixth sense.

Wait until you inner ear fails you, even temporary (which WILL happen during your lifetime, be convinced of it) and then you will realize the absolute importance of it. Life with an unresponsive inner ear is absolute hell.

To get back to motion sickness it happens because of the conflict between what you see and what you feel. Brain / inner ear / eyes conflict. It's basically the same thing when you're in a stopped train, and another train on the tracks next to you starts moving, you don't know if it's you moving or the other train, and you get dizzy quickly.

Same thing with VR. People arguing about not feeling it are liars, and even then they're just moving goalposts. VR in it's current state is absolute trash.
