Food levels mostly. And training levels occasional. The magikarp I've found tend to have a food bonus more often than a training bonus. Maybe that's just my luck tho.

So what other events can make you lose your magikarp early? I've only lost mine from the berry tree, but I imagine you could lose one in the event where you tell magikarp to swim all the way home as well.
