My opinion is that Before is more entertaining than After. Not sure if you'll agree if you do play it again but I say give it another try. The story does get more interesting when you get deeper into it. That's how I felt anyway.

The true end to Ever17 is a bit overrated honesty. It's got a few cool moments, but once you get what it's doing, it seems to go on forever. Too many recycled scenes as well.

Nakazawa has really fine ideas, but he doesn't fully realize them and HE DOESN'T KNOW WHEN TO STOP. IO ended perfectly with E. Alright, C' and D' were nice epilogues. But A', B' and E' were fucking awful and kept introducing new things without ever resolving them and was generally just a mess. Root Double started great. After route was actually tense with all that survival stufd. But then... eh.
Uchikoshi, on the other hand, knows how to write characters and when to stop adding new shit to story.

They really complemented each other in E17 and R11.

It's more straightforward in R11 but less explained at the same time. That Guy/David/etc. is the player, who is able to influence the world, and your perception of the story during the prologue killed the real Satoru's sister, which led to him and Naoya concocting the Yukidoh plan to entrap you in an infinite loop (and depending on how you interpret it, possibly bring back Sayaka) since that's the only way to "kill" a fourth-dimensional entity.

It's good but not as good. 999 felt more foreboding, the horror vibe was a lot stronger. There's no time limit in VLR (like the sinking ship in 999) and it doesn't feel as graphic (9 explodes at the start of 999 where as the watches in VLR inject you with too much anesthetic and kill you peacefully).

Despite that VLR is still top notch.
