Has a video game ever actually changed the way you think and perceive the world /v/. I mean mgs2 has got to be the pinnacle of a video game ever becoming art.
>>
I find MGS2 to be the most fucking scary game ever. Of how much fucking things it predicted and of stuff that could happen.
>>
>>378157754
It was MGS2 for me too, actually. But I didn't realize it's true message until I started browsing 4chan, ironically.

This is probably the only game that i would consider art. Because if your critique ''modern art'' you also have to take into account what the art represents inside and outside the art museum. This game does that as well.

Because Kojima is incorporating it into the narrative and experience by using it to subvert the player's expectations. Using the medium's existence as a marketable product to manipulate the audience is a pretty novel concept, and he uses it to accomplish something that's really only possible in a video game by exploring the relationship between the player and the protagonist.

I would hear an argument for calling it an Easter Egg. To claim it is simply an Easter Egg and nothing more though would be foolish. There's just too much evidence and too many other references to the player with regards to Raiden for the dog tags to be irrelevant to his role as representing the player.

Listen your response to this will probably be "but games are supposed to be fun" and you may well be right (and I do think for that reason talking about games as though they are art is a pretty difficult thing) but art is not meant to just entertain you or please you, it is meant to provoke you and challenge you in some way. You are supposed to feel frustrated by all those failings. You're supposed to be annoyed that you're not Solid Snake.

Does that make for a fun game? Up to you, but the thread is about MGS2 as a work of art, and I genuinely think it holds up as a piece of art evoking exactly the response in people it intended to. See that other triggered anon in this thread.

Then i was dissapointed that no matter what i did nothing worked.

I understand your viewpoints, i often use RE1 as an example of a game thats not fun but is a great game. Its all manner of horrible things, but still widely acclaimed as one of the greatest games of all time. I think MGS2 took it too far, it succeeded in being art but failed at being a game.

In seeing it that way you are willfully ignoring other pieces of information and the implications of that information.

What would be the point of simply recognizing that you entered your name, age and country earlier in the game? What purpose does it serve? If it were as simple as that, why would it even be considered an Easter Egg? Why is it referenced when it is? Why does your ability to skip cutscenes, or control anything, cease after he throws the dog tags away? And so on.

Your claim of it being simply an Easter Egg raises too many questions and I imagine it would be European-Extremely difficult to answer them without conceding that Raiden is a representation of the player and that the dog tags are a piece of evidence to corroborate that.

Everything else, I stopped caring about after the Arsenal Gear shit. Fuck Raiden, fuck Rose, fuck the AI going bonkers, fuck the shitty boss fights. I wanted this game to end.

If that is truly the case then how can you confidently make claims about meaning and intent? If you are the person I have been replying to, an admittance like this puts your claim on even shakier ground.

As for the rest of your post, there's not much I can say. I'm not very interested in your opinion on the events of the game or about the game as a whole. You don't make any arguments for them either so there's nothing to even refute.

If it's worth anything though, I would recommend giving it another go in the future with an open mind, if only for the reasons of my previous posts.

It was an attempt to fix a perceived problem with MGS1. People tended to just watch the radar instead of their environment as they made their way through Shadow Moses. Needing to log into the node served as an awareness and stealth test. You need to prove you don't need it before you can enjoy its benefits. I say it was an attempt as most players found it frustrating. I don't believe the game design is at fault though as there are plenty of ways of surveying an area and planning from safety that are directly shown to the player but unfortunately mostly ignored. There's also a silent tranquilizer gun for those who wished to sidestep the stealth entirely.

Yeah I had that idea. I'm not too pushed if one or many people didn't like the game. I didn't do it just for the sake of convincing someone of the merits of MGS2. Not only were more than just him reading it but it's enjoyable to talk about this game and to really put your thoughts/theories together and make sure they're coherent to others. And to practice writing because I can never actually write this much when I want to.

>>378173578
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Your way of doing things is an important aspect of the thematic element of the game as has been discussed previously. If you were to replay it though I would recommend trying a full stealth, minimal weapon approach. It can be very thrilling.

>If you were to replay it

the problem is that there are several factors that kill any replay of MGS2:
Raiden
The bad level design of Big Shell
the horrible boss fights
The plot going off the rails at the last part of the game
Being forced to use a gimmick weapon with bad controls for the final boss
Listening to Rose nag on the on the save screen

I know they are not relevant to a stealth playthrough but they are relevant to killing any idea of a replay.

As for bad level design, most of the struts were annoying twists and turns with the possibility of guard coming out of the blue until you get to the node. Then you also have to backtrack thought that crap.

As for bad boss fights:
Vamp - small area with the instant kill put in the middle. Plus he is hard to hit and had that annoying shadow pin move (I am now aware of shooting out the lights)
Harrier - hardly any place to dodge and sometimes the middles would be too slow to hit it
Rays - you had to get into a rhythm and if you get out of it, you are boned
Solidus - you had to use the sword. Enough said.

>>378175367

>with the possibility of guard coming out of the blue until you get to the node

And you're fitted with all the tools to avoid it, did you want to play as a ghost?

>Vamp - small area with the instant kill put in the middle.

Gasp, never seen that before.

>Plus he is hard to hit and had that annoying shadow pin move (I am now aware of shooting out the lights)

But apparently you are not aware of the lock on button which you can just depress before shooting. You should also call for advice more often.

>Harrier - hardly any place to dodge

Plenty, in fact.

>and sometimes the middles would be too slow to hit it

This happens when he hits mach 2.

>Rays - you had to get into a rhythm and if you get out of it, you are boned

Acquire proficiency? They're not that many/hard when you're not playing extreme.

>Solidus - you had to use the sword. Enough said.

But the sword play is fun when you know how to use it. Felt like Bushido Blade met Ape Escape.

How do skippable plot elements kill the idea of a replay? You know what happens and you know you don't like them and you don't have to endure them. There is no reason for them to kill a replay.

I would want more specific examples than annoying twists and turns. I have said earlier that awareness of guards or lack thereof can be totally blamed on the player not using the tools at their disposal. Ironically, the backtracking that you take issue with serves to further learn the environment/guard patrols and also make logging into the nodes more worthwhile as the benefits are apparent more than once.

As for Vamp, did you dislike the Ocelot fight in MGS1 too?
Does a boss being difficult make it inherently bad? That is something I glean from your problems with all but Solidus.
As for Solidus himself, I can understand the fight being frustrating if you dislike using the sword but for most it's a new toy that is unlike any other weapon in the game. Aside from the novelty of it, it is designed well enough to be used in the fight.
>>
>>378177283
>How do skippable plot elements kill the idea of a replay?

because I apparently need to replay this game to "get" it.

>As for Vamp, did you dislike the Ocelot fight in MGS1 too?

You don't need to replay the game to "get" it. Reading up on it would be sufficient to gain insight on the thematic relevance of the plot and gameplay. I recommend replaying it to you solely for its good game design, particularly the stealth aspect.

Regarding Vamp I have to ask you again, does a boss being difficult make it inherently bad? Vamp dodging your attacks should push you to improve your aim/tactics. If you are the runner and gunner I replied to earlier then your aiming should be up to the task.
>>
>>378178748
>does a boss being difficult make it inherently bad?
there's a fine line between difficulty and annoying.

Vamp was annoying
stuff like Artorias and King Alant was difficult not annoying

And what of the rest of my point? Artorias similarly dodges a lot. Where does learning Artorias strategies succeed where learning Vamp strategies fail for you? Both require knowledge of the moveset and good timing. Both are one on one "use everything you've learned" boss fights. What makes one annoying and the other not?
>>
>>378180045
>What makes one annoying and the other not?

it's that whenever I tried something different on Vamp it ended up in one of two ways:
1. I misuse the different weapon and ends up not working at all
2. Vamp dodges it anyway

I don't want to call your ability into question but I don't see another possibility based on what you've put forth. You say yourself that you misuse weapons and you apparently refuse to let go of the lock on button. Vamp isn't impervious to being shot. He can be hit by basically all weapons. All any of them require is manually aiming and shooting.
>>
>>378181207
so Vamp only goes into Matrix dodge mode if you lock onto him?
>>
>>378179158
I dunno man, beating Vamp on European extreme with stun grenades and the M9 felt like the achievement of the century. Once you've gotten the counters for all of his moves down it's really not that hard.

>>
>>378181590
You can literally unload an entire mp4 magazine with him stationary on the wall and it won't register as a hit. Sounds retarded but so was Psycho Mantis since he also magically dodged into hits, but both were fun. Vamp is more thrilling tho.

Yeah. He mentions in the preceding cutscene about how your muscles give away where you're going to fire or however he puts it. Calling Colonel translates that into gameplay terms and it means don't lock on.

It's infuriating. Most bosses can kill you in a hit or two, and you can only carry 2 rations. EU Extreme forces you to have a robotic understanding of the bosses with impeccable timing.
