I really feel like Taro's games do a wonderful job of using the medium of games. Automata, though less emotional and maybe less "clever" than it's predecessor, comes off as pretty intellectual for a game. Nearly every event, sidequest, etc. focuses on the themes of the game, and explores them from different angles. For example: Memories are your very identity, memories hold you back, memories aren't important, etc., and then it forces the player to make a choice about memory in order to continue the narrative in a way another medium can't do. Oh, sure, a book or a film can ask you to make a choice, but Automata forces you to either put your conclusion into practice or stop playing. And I think that's incredible.

He'a not the first to do this, and I doubt he'll be the best at it when humanity's said and done, but I think he'a the best at it right now.

Its very unlikely that there's going to be any more DLC for Automata. They're out of budget and Yoko Taro has already moved out of the platinum offices. I also doubt that he'll want to revisit these characters again for future entries which is probably a good thing because I don't think my heart could take it.

My problem with Automata is precisely the fact that it's so "literary." My biggest pet peeve with so-called "great" literature is that it's often so simplistic and/or vague with it's theming and symbolism that its value is largely contingent on what you, the reader, bring to the table. I enjoy stories because they take me outside of myself; I want as little of me and my preexisting notions, ideals, etc. to be involved as possible.

And the notion that it's somehow "revolutionary" in its use of gameplay to communicate meaning is completely nonsensical to me. Almost all the major story beats proceed and conclude in traditional static cutscenes, and the few meaningful choices you make are not structurally dissimilar from something you'd find in a Witcher or Mass Effect.

I can't really speak for Taro since I haven't played the games but this is something I do agree on with Kojima. Alot of his writing seems to be a mashup of shit from movies and even characters. If you pay attention to his favorite movies list and his games you can find so much inspiration in them found back.

Kojima also loves inserting shit like the I-pod in MGS4 because he happened to be obsessed with Apple products at the time. He really acts like an autistic kid who inserts everything he obsseses about in a game and loves his fanfiction tier writing.

I still enjoy his games anyways.

I haven't seen a lot of movies with it. Certainly zero anime. Also, 2 hour movie, 20 to 100 hour anime shows, 40 hour game.
