I honestly don't even think it has much to do with the game anymore.

I'm not saying people don't leave because they don't like the state of the game but even if the next expansion was the best one ever it doesn't change the fact that a lot of the playerbase that was in highschool or uni when vanilla launched now have jobs/kids/other commitments now. That and teenagers these days aren't nearly as receptive to MMOs as we were back in the 2000s, they prefer assfaggots and CSGO or other games with esports scenes.

Over the years I have come to accept that it might not have been WoW, but me. It was the first MMO I ever played and the only one I was ever really deeply into. I'm not even sure if a game could ever make me this excited again. Sometimes I still go listen to the OST of Vanilla and Burning Crusade and think about how everything seemed like this incredibly big and vast adventure that would never end. I don't think I would feel that same way about WoW if I had played it in my 20s, but it's one of the few games I really do feel something like Nostalgia for.
It's for the same reason I know Legion or XIV or any other MMO could scratch that itch. I am just way more jaded and would probably run from quest to quest to hit endgame as soon as possible and then run dungeons ad nauseam. Back then I just wanted to explore and see more of that world, sometimes I would just wander around aimlessly and take it all in. WoW came out at the right time for me and that is probably the main reason I hold it in such high regard... Every few years I still go to a Vanilla server and just go through the first few zones to take me back, but I never really want to go much further than that because I know that time is gone.
