It was a new change to Castlevania with interesting RPG mechanics added in. Also, it is a very long game, especially playing completely blind. It has classic bosses and new bosses that are great. It has a NG+ mode.
I don't know I could go on and on. Surprisingly, I never played this game til a Frenchman showed me it on emulator in college. After I beat it, I played Castlevania4 and X on SNES. SoTN is definitely my favorite, then 4, then the DS versions are pretty good.
Also item farming in this game is pretty good, kind of like Dark Souls with lots of humanity + Gold serpent ring.

I don't know, after belmont the game became pretty hard and with a much bigger punish for death than in previous Castlevanias.
