Australia being a meme-continent is something that's existed for at least a thousand years.
>The idea of dry land in the southern climes, the Terra Australis, was introduced by Ptolemy and appears on European maps as an imaginary continent from the 15th century.
It was pretty much always hypothesised that there was a landmass on the opposite side of the globe to Europe (dubbed the Antipodes) and rumours abounded regarding the bizarre creatures that would exist on such a place; people that walked on their hands and other weird shit. This carried on to European settlement, and when reports of the wildlife that existed in Australia started coming back they simply didn't believe it. The Platypus is the best example with early naturalists dismissing descriptions and even taxidermied samples as a hoax until they finally brought back live ones.
The spirit still persists today with Australians trying to fool foreigners into believing the existence of things like the bunyip and dropbears.
