They don't have to make it all railroady like TW3 was because theres no plot to resolve and you aren't stuck to playing as one preset character. They can make it a true RPG. Mike Pondsmith is working on this with them, he's got to help them see the light.

To be fair Witcher 3 may have been a game changer for open world RPGs, although not in any dramatic sense the way Skyrim was. I'm not saying Fallout 4 was a horrendous abomination because it wasn't and that certainly affected the post-launch opinions, but I think game's honeymoon ended a LOT sooner when people saw what Witcher 3 pulled off.

I agree totally, TW3 has plenty of flaws, but none of those flaws are bad enough to ruin my enjoyment. Yeah, combat can be a little repetitive esp on higher difficulties, and the game itself is (almost) never hard, but there are so many redeeming factors, I can ignore those problems handily.

Honestly, I think the same about TW2 and TW1 (enhanced editions, the originals were buggy and unpolished AF.) Lots of people have a hate-boner for TW2 because two entire chapters were cut out of the game, and I understand that, but the game feels finished and polished despite all the cut content.

Yes some of those games might have gameplay elements better than TW3 (actually none of them, they're all flawed in one way or another).

TW3's writing is top notch, and doesn't feel like it was written by someone with just a high school degree in English. Characters are complex and compelling, have unique motivations, don't fit in the neat niches we're familiar with (both comfortable and uncomfortable), have lives that don't revolve around the playing character etc. The lore and storytelling is done just as well.

Agreed. When you where approaching the bloody baron I expected the typical monstrous lord of the land. Instead he came across as a decent person who cared about his family.

When it looked like he was beating his wife I thought his true monstrous colors would be revealed but he was still portrayed as a complicated man. A western game in that situation would have treated as a monster like Whoreson for hitting his wife but real life is more complicated and the writing was very mature in that aspect.

TW3 has some of the most beautiful visuals and quest writing I've ever played, while BotW probably has the most lovingly crafted map of any large open world I've played. It's not really wrong to say that both games are having an effect on the genre, but for different reasons.

CDPR has never been very good at gameplay and now they're venturing into a different style altogether so I'm maintaining healthy skepticism on that front. As for the story, Witcher 3 had retarded moments and everything after the kaer morhen battle was a rushed poorly written mess. Then they chose to release paid DLCs and cash in on Gwent instead of polishing the main game with an enhanced edition like they had with the previous games.

I don't know, Cyberpunk could turn out to be good but it could also be mediocre. And like with old Bioware games people would too be blinded by their fanboyism to admit that CDPR released anything less than pure gold. It's too early to definitively say anything either way though but imo in this industry it's safer to avoid hype, set realistic expectations and then be pleasantly surprised than to obsessively latch onto every shiny new toy that promises the world and then get upset when it turns out to be not as good as you expected.
