Thwomps have sticky sides that let them stick to things, and to fall they have a large hammer-like appendage contained within their shell that dislodges them from the wall. They also use the sticky sides to climb back up.

Like many stone objects in Mario world, Thwomps levitate too. It just how the Mario setting works.
