I spend, at most, one hour on a character at a time. Going past that gives me tunnel vision where my standard is what I'm seeing right now and not what an actual human looks like. If I can go back to tweaking a character, I might go back as frequently as I see flaws in them, if I meant for them to be pretty or handsome.

For characters that aren't supposed to look "good"/attractive, I spend as long as it takes to deliver a certain trait about the character through their face alone.

Depends on the rest of the game. If it has great build variety like Dark Souls II, I spend a LONG time on it. If all characters end up being more or less the same, I spend less time.

90% of games I come to accept that my face likely will be hidden behind a full helmet for the whole game and that whatever I make probably will end up looking freakish if I screw around too much. Usually just change a few colors and sliders and I'm done if it's in a game where most cosmetic stuff is tied to equipment.

All bars are off once I enter the game and gets me some nice clothes and armors though. I get considerably more frivolous on subsequent souls runs.

Also, provided that cosmetics and stuff don't depend on gameplay crap at all, I spend entirely too long on character creation.

you can't change size of hands in HS. It's one of the biggest faults with the character creator.

Single player games: Literally hours some times if the creator is either really shit but can eventually be made to work, or if the creator is really in depth. Less time if it's just selecting presets like some games where you only have 4 choices for eyes/nose/mouth etc.

Multiplayer games: As long as I can get away with until my friends start to get pissed that I'm taking too long, usually I try to pretend that I'm still downloading the game while I work on my character for a while.

Autism mode:
Any game where I'm able to edit the character after creation, either through a normal feature in game or through console commands, I will manually "age" and "scar" my character.

Dragon's Dogma was a big one for that, every time I did a rough fight I would go back to town and change my character and my pawn.

By the end, my loli archer bulked up with muscle, had a few scars and a missing eye and a drastically changed face. Same with my pawn.

Then in post-game where I spent dozens of hours in a dark dungeon, my character turned as pale as possible to make up for it. I'm an autist with character customization, I know.

I actually didn't expect things to end up like this but I decided to really try putting myself out there for a change. I had played FFXI and people were really social in that and I had actually made friends. After I quit though I became really reclusive and isolated myself a lot, wouldn't talk to people much or at all. When the original FFXIV was coming out I figured it would be my second chance to make friends, so I had to play it. Needless to say, the original FFXIV was so bad they had to destroy it and rebuild the game from the ground up. I was pretty depressed but I had met a group in 1.0 and we got together again when the game turned to ARR. Through them I met more people and eventually I actually became comfortable enough to make new friends outside of my group. Sometimes it's tough to socialize being introverted and having pretty bad anxiety, but I really recommend trying, it could change your life. I've actually met up with some people in real life and I can see myself being friends with a lot of these people for a very long time.

Sorry for the blog stuff. I just really empathized with what you said and I felt bad cause I know how it feels. I'm on Excalibur myself so if you ever come over here I'll hang out with you, but I wouldn't want to force you to move away if you're settled in there. Otherwise, maybe we'll bump into each other in duty finder or party finder some time.

Anyone else do this? Also, posting my DaS3 SL1 character. I didn't spend too long on her, but I'm happy with it. I make black characters in Dark Souls because I think it looks better when you're wearing dark colored armor and some of your skin is visible. With light-skinned characters, it sticks out too much and looks weird. In DaS2, I had to make a big tattoo covering my character's entire face in order to get the color right, since black characters always end up with ridiculously bright red Rudolph noses.

I was perfectly happy when the character creator was as simple as picking a face and hairstyle out of a set lineup, a-la Morrowind.

All of these new-fangled character creation options are unnecessary if you ask me.

It depends if I've taken my Adderall or not. Most of the time I just pick a generic face and then randomize it a couple times until it's in a place I like.

If I'm really focused though I'll print out reference pictures and work on tweaking the face just perfectly. I once spent six hours creating a perfect facsimile of my self in the Sims, alongside a perfect model of my own house, based off our floor plans, even downloading new content to get the furniture as close to perfect as possible. By the time I realized the irony of wasting an entire day so a simulated version of myself could live a productive life, it was too late.

Champions Online, superhero MMO.

Character creator is great at designing all kinds of weird outfits and bodytypes. Character design is in no way tied to gameplay either, so you can be as waifish or swole or fat as whatever and still be able to use any type of power.

The face customization is kind of crap though and there's a ridiculous number of cosmetic unlocks that cost money.

I can spend hours in Eve Onlines character creator trying to make the perfect qt waifu to self insert as or the most Aryan looking man to play as even though you dont even see your character beyond station view, and spend 99% of ths game viewing your ship instead.

Thats why I wish they had added the ingame public stations, and walking inside stations and ships they promised ages ago, so all that work won't be wastsd, but well its nice that people still try anyways, I've saved the portraits of a lot of qt or good looking characters I've come across when playing Eve, but it would be even cooler to see them in person, on a station.

Quite a lot. It doesn't always produce good faces, but I'm just never satisfied. And usually when I get it to a place I like, the next time I play the game I'll notice some things about the face that I don't like and (if possible) go back and continue editing.

Haven't played Fallout 4 in a long time but pic related was one of those. I probably edited her four or five times throughout that playthrough and I'm still not completely happy with her appearance.

Impressive, you managed to make one of the few FO4 female characters I've seen that don't show their underlying "Nora" base template easily, in other words she looks really original.

Thats one thing I've noticed from these threads, those who spend more than a day on their characters, and refine them several times more tend to have the ones that look least like the template shape/appearance - the default look, and thus look best or at least look unique, after hours and hours of laborious sculpting and refining, I've done that just once or twice in a game myself.
