Actually the reason why they stopped was because that was as far as licensing them to DiC went, by 1993 DiC ditched Nintendo properties in favor of doing Sonic cartoons, Nintendo went to Nelvana to do the Donkey Kong Country cartoon so nothing changed.

Yeah, they really, really botched up the reboot. The whole purpose of the reboot was to re-establish things, to flush out the old (Penders) continuity, and preferably to have a good spot for new readers to start again. And then, perhaps ten pages in, they just start having everyone remember everything and begin referencing the last 30 years of comics.

Nearly every issue had two or three references back to events which happened much, much earlier in canon. If the reboot was attempting to entice and retain it new readers, who mostly jumped in right as the reboot happened, then asking them to read Issue #365 and Issue #2 Sonic Lost Worlds, and any number of other older comics, is quickly going to turn them off. Nobody is going to read a new comic series just to be told about the ten other comic series they should be reading first.
