Can only tell you about Stellaris. The game feels great at the start. I had a lot of fun creating my own alien species and setting up a cool galaxy to play in. The begining is very interesting, there is a lot to do, to explore. After you find some AI players and develop yourself more, the game gets quite slow. This is the same that everybody says: early-game is great, mid-game is boring. I'm waiting for it to get some expansions and then I'll play it again (I got it for release and haven't played since) after they improve mid-game and add more content (which I think they have already added with Utopia dlc).

The most recent patch has made it possible for you to assign social class to races in your Empire, which can and does include "Purges" or "sterilization."

ES2 is your standard bread and butter space 4x. It does nothing unique but it is familiar.

Stellaris is more unique in that it is a blend of Paradox's grand strategy genre with the 4x genre.

However Paradox constantly updates their games, so Stellaris is very different now than it was on release. It will likely be far more different in a years time.

I think ES2 is kind of it's own thing. Still a 4x but all of the Endless games are just so bizarre in their execution. It's a good thing though. Endless games are weird and different, but not so much that it doesn't seem familiar.

Stellaris is more of a classic 4x, but the scale is dialed up to 11. Just wait, an Aurorafag will show up to shit all over everything here in a minute.

I don't know. I still thoroughly enjoy both games. I like Stellaris because it's big and tells huge stories. It is a bit of a mashed together RNG storytelling, but I dig it for that.

ES2 has a more focused storytelling, so it's stories are richer and more fleshed out but it does just feel quite a bit smaller and ever so slightly railroaded. Not enough to ruin the game but I always feel like I do a few playthroughs of any endless game and it has told me all it has to say.

Stellaris offers a much more customization experience, better for roleplaying and injecting your own personality into your empire.

Endless Space 2 is much more story focused, with empires having their own personalities, quirks and story questlines.

Only really risk it if either my smuggling gets detected or my horse loses. Endless Space 2 seems more focused and balanced. It's a very solid 4x.

Stellaris has the random events, really detailed custom races, crisis events, crazy researches like ascension and being able to eat other races (even going to far as to genetically modify them to be more delicious) and whatnot, which makes it somewhat fun in its own way, despite the 4x elements being somewhat lacking. It kinda turns into a 'wacky empire' simulator.

In terms of gameplay mechanics Stellaris is just a casualized version of Distant Worlds. Also a downgrade to Paradox's previous games in nearly every way, even the advertised "muh roleplay" mechanics since quests and events dry out quickly due to anomalies disappearing over time, and there's not a large variety of them. Every single game boils down to
>Wide: blob and blob and blob, space combat is cat and mouse doomstack vs. doomstack (even worse than previous Paradox games due to lack of logistics) and planet invasions are basically a pop-a-mole mini-game
>Tall: stare at the screen forever due to lack of trade, diplomacy, internal politics, non-militaristic ways to expand, and non-militaristic victory conditions

Your first game will be pretty nice when you're just discovering things for the first time and race customization seems very expansive at first, but by your second game you'll realize nearly all of the race traits are nothing but boring % increases, all the other randomized races you encounter are completely without personality and you get roughly the same events and empire progression every single time. Paradox is also lazy as fuck with the supposed "special" Ethos and civics, f.ex. Hive Mind empires get the same exact immersion breaking events as the normal races talking about "your people reacting" or "your scientist Autonomous Drone XYZ was traumatized by seeing shit" etc.

If you want game like Stellaris, but actually good pick Distant Worlds: Universe.
If you want a slow-paced space RTS with light 4X elements pick Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
If you want an actual space 4X pick Endless Space 2 later, possibly in a sale because the current version has some big bugs and the advertised strikecraft are only coming later in a free patch.

Stellaris is still a fucking mess with awful combat. Until they fix the farce that is weapon techs mass corvettes will still be the most cost efficient way to deal with anything and even if it weren't fleet management is trash and combat is just a clusterfuck of "either your blob wins overwhelmingly or it loses overwhelmingly" with nothing in between.

Diplomacy is broken and federations flat out don't work. Your allies will literally never help you. I'm sure stellaris will be a great game once it has 20 dlc expansions like every other fucking paradox game.
