At the point in which I had a a few girls at RANK 7 it was essentially a 3 way race between Chihaya, Kawakami, and Haru. All of this because DUDE THERE'S A TRAITOR IN THE GAME, FIGURE IT OUT at the start of the game. And DUDE HOW DID YOU END UP ARRESTED story framing. All of this wrote them into a corner by the Casino AND it meant Sae kept spoiling who you targeted before you even knew them. It's mind boggling how so many pieces of Persona 5 make sense thematically (Confidants/contractors names, just about every Confidant helps your skillset in ways that make sense without feeling contrived, holdup and hostages, etc) and then you have the giant plot that lives and dies by 3 characters: Futaba, Sae, and Makoto.

If they didn't do the whole "you got captured, who sold you out" storyline we would have an opportunity to have Akechi and the Thieves have a 1-2 months of cat and mouse rivalry. But they can't undo any of this in Persona 5 Crimson because they wrote themselves into a nice little corner.

I always felt that the ruse cruise wasn't really about Akechi betraying your gang and more about how you actually pretended to fall for it, making the twist about your position in the story than the actual "traitor".

It does throw Akechi's character under the bus but that's why I thought it was way too obvious with how everything was getting too good for him. Kinda reminds me of a lot of Kaito Kid heists where the MC's fate is left ambiguous until the very end where it reveals how he actually duped them all.

Sae also implies that there's something more than meets the eye at how everything in the game was resolved. Like they were all pawns in a game. She says that AFTER the big climax and it felt...really outta place, like it was alluding to something greater like Yalda or if it was Yalda itself and she just didn't know. There are a couple lines that stood out for me in my first playthrough that weird me out. Ann saying "I've felt like I've known Morgana for a long time, but I can't put my finger on it". Morgana's Shadow subplot alluded and then dismissed, it didn't help that the game kept asking you how you perceive Morgana as a cat or a human trapped in a cat's body. It's just, where the fuck were they going with these ideas and why were they dumped. I would have loved to see your answers shaped Morgana's human form's gender.

Akechi's just an awfully handled character in general. His motivations and plans are pretty stupid, but everyone seems to think so in-universe as well. It's just that his edgelord side and entire backstory is just dumped on you in a single chunk of dialogue and the only foreshadowing is barely two lines of dialogue.

I would have liked him a lot more if he actually believed in all the justice bullshit he spouts and was a total sanctimonious, ends justify the means wanker who can only see things in black or white instead of what we got.

At the TV station Akechi says that the Phantom Thieves are merely creating villains just to take credit for making the villains confess to their crimes. It was something along those lines, I can't remember, but in hindsight Akechi shittalking on TV was him projecting very hard. He goes around blackmailing and doing hits, then takes credit as an "ace detective".

For Akechi's character to go down in flames because DUDE I HATE MY DAD LMAO really soured the way the curtain was drawn on him for me. I think Akechi might be a cultural thing, he seems to be well received in Japan because of orphan and out of wedlock stigma in Japanese culture, whereas in the West there are lot of super villains who have similar backgrounds to Akechi but don't become tremendous murderous faggots. It explains why the Persona 5 director had to talk about how villains and heroes differ from Japan/West on a Playstation Blog post. Also there's that whole Akechi is a Adachi without any charm rehash he has going for him. If you could rewrite Persona 5, would you give the villain spotlight to Shido, Yalda, or Akechi?

I actually like a lot of what they had to work with with Akechi. The whole idea of him strongly believing justice would have been great at first glance, but even with him not giving a shit about that I still think they could have made him work if they didn't blow their load in one go. You only really got to know him in his main reveal, and he left just as soon as you actually "met" him.

I'll admit I didn't expect much from Shido, so I was actually more surprised by how well he was handled for someone who's just a complete asshole. Sure he wasn't the deepest villain and he was pretty straightforward, but I liked how they actually bothered peppering the overarching story with his presence much in the same way Sae was. With Akechi you couldn't even tell what was true or not about his character, and when you did he was already dead.

Again, I was really surprised how the game really drove home how Shido was Joker's arch enemy, while Akechi was just a mirrored version of Joker who was essentially just a victim of Shido's the same way you were at the start of the game.

Maybe I haven't read much on Lex Luthor in a while but I thought Shido was more of a straight up asshole and barely even bothered to hide it unlike Luthor who usually has proper justification for his actions but his insecurities against Superman are what brings him down.

With Shido, I thought the main point was how people people didn't really care who led the way and because of their complacency it put someone as shittily evil as Shido into power. It made his lead-up boss cutscene feel more hyped considering how he barely tried to hide how much of an asshole he was throughout the entire game outside of his TV personality.

Assuming that Kaneko designed both naked purple Loki and gimp suit Loki, I wish that he would do more redesigns of the older demons. He has great ideas but honestly I don't feel like a ton of the more classic demons have aged well.

I really like how freaky the four archangels are in SMTIVA but those designs definitely wouldn't work in another game.

I like them both, I just don't know which I prefer. That Loki has the mischievous look down, but P5's Loki is great too, the way it's hard to make out its exact from is extremely fitting for a trickster. It's kind of unfortunate that it will probably never get used again, but I suppose there's been plenty of great demon designs only used in one game.

Also, Odin's HD model looks really good even though I don't really like the design, kind of makes me sad they're using Doi's design for SMT HD.

I think Shido is fine enough as he is; he's a total bastard who doesn't really give a damn who he hurts, and that's something that I feel is "real" enough to maintain.

Akechi should be expanded, I don't think he got enough spotlight to really drive home the more sympathetic elements of his character. We only find out who he "really is" in the moment before his death, I think there should be more to it.

Yaldabaoth should be expanded too, but in a more subtle way. As it is, it kinda feels like we take a hard left into the final dungeon. I feel there should be more discussion about the complacency of society and its role in creating monsters peppered throughout the game. Maybe there is, I'm gonna hop into a second playthrough sometime in the next month or so, but as it is it just feels a bit sudden and could use more beefing up. Thematically, I like what they were doing with him though.

I don't like IV's archangels at all. Maybe they'd look good in another game, but they're totally out of place with the other angels. Not to mention Seraph's design has the same idea behind it but looks much better. Doesn't help them that they're very detailed yet there stuck on sprites on the low resolution 3DS screen.

Regardless, Kaneko didn't do them, it was some guest artist whose name I forget, but Kaneko won't be doing anything for SMT for sometime, if ever.

I finished Mementos on my first playthrough and I thought that contributed in making the final stuff come across more naturally.

It really felt like a natural transition into Yaldabaoth's main reveal where the side quests actually ended up being a bigger deal than they were initially put out to be.

Shido's fine enough as-is and he did his job as the main human antagonist. It's really Akechi that needed some work and I feel like he needed more downtime moments that should have contributed in easing you into the sympathetic elements of his character.

Not necessarily, they just need to keep in mind what connects the rest of the angels. They could have still had the archangels be the unsettling and odd designs that they were, but if they also kept in mind that the rest of the angels do have many traditionally angelic qualities, they could have included those as well. Seraph does that by still being very unusual looking but maintaining it's angelic feel by being winged and having a white-gold color palette. The guest artist was probably given free reign rather than being given guidelines, but I'm sure if they asked him to retain the traditionally angelic quality in some way he would have done so.

Persona 4 vanilla ended on December. The True Ending route is still a single day in the new year so it really does end in December. Persona 4 Golden was the one that fleshed out the game to perfection.

Don't know how other Makotofags feel (I kept away from /v/ or anything P5-related in fear of spoilers) but I actually like her specifically because she feels like someone you kinda had to work hard for to keep up with. Your relationship with her feels more functional than outright romantic, and somehow I find that more chill/comfy. It does make the romance scenes more enticing especially when you consider her prim/proper personality as an honor student (particularly the "study partner" schtick). In my case though, it helps that I actually relate to her the most out of the entire cast, both personality-wise and in terms of studies/hobbies.

That said, I did notice how a lot of them are obsessed with parading her as the "canon girl" and fawn over her being a "stronk independent woman". Much as she gets my pick among the girls, I still the think the others are great in their own right, so maybe I'm the weird one.

I didn't use a guide. I hardly ever worked jobs, I missed out on a few things like fishing (never knew it existed) and playing video games or watching movies/DVDs.

I also wasted a lot of Kindness and Charm gains from the social links by being maxed already.

I abused Chihaya's relationship fortune as much as I could though. It was quite close, finished the last one in December.
