It depends on what you want the alien to convey to the player.
The Xenomorph looks like a monster because you're supposed to be scared of it even though it would make much more sense for a silent hunter to look as inconspicuous as possible.
If you want to create aliens that interact in different ways and express different emotions to the player the easiest way is to just take a human and fuck around with some traits.
Another example are the Krogen in ME, they're supposed to be violent, irascible and strong so they look the part, same for the Asari, they're supposed to be wise, intelligent and charismatic so they look the part.
Realism is not the best way to entertain people, you're making a videogame not a scientific documentary.

That would make sense if not for the glaring evolutionary flaws that the right keeps. Can you spot the obvious things it does not need or would be better off having the more humanoid alternatives, or do I have to spell them out for you? I know there are some species which don't fix all their evolutionary flaws, but these are glaring. The basic consensus of why the weirdo aliens look the way they do is as followed:

Is it very humanoid and normal looking? That's because it's evolutionary track got rid of all the unnecessary BS and chose a line that was not only more suitable for it's living but easier for to function in an intelligent society. Thinks that would be deemed attractive are now emphasized, the skin is now made smoother or more luminous, etc.

Is it of low intelligence, at a disadvantage of it's new environment, built for combat or other? That's... well, I think you can read the humanoid reason and fill in the blanks for it. Xenomorphs are alpha predators and are build for it, experimentation or not. Skipped ET because the fucker freaked me out, so I can't comment on that. Greys are like that because it's generally assumed that they are extremely advanced and have long gone past sexual attraction phrase and either do not need to reproduce normally or do it only for reproductive purposes like animals, but within moderation. Their heads are that big to hold their massive brains, their eyes are most likely able to see things we cannot, maybe even see in the dark or some shit, etc. They're bodies and their skin are probably that way because it's more suitable for all kinds of planets equally, instead of being great for a couple and shit for others. I mean, you can argue and assume the evolutionary sense for all these guys, but the one on the right just has so much things it doesn't need or could do without. Why does it have an inferior nose when it's supposed to be evolved and have a humanoid-ish skull? The right is just obvious sex appeal over design. That's fine and all but don't try to BS that it makes sense.
