I'm excited for this but when exactly is the release date? I thought it was supposed to come out late last year or early this year?

Is this and Bannerlord gonna be the best RPGs since Gothic?

From what I've gathered from dev blogs and gameplay footage, combat is going to be shit. Literally dumbed down M&B mechanics with pretty animations.

So you can name me at least some instances where your character build choices provide you alternative ways of progress in the game? Genuinely curious here, because, from what I've seen, all M&B games have to offer are combat and general C&C, not actual roleplaying, but that may be because I haven't played m&B games apart from the vanilla game and even then I only spent a couple of hours playing it.

In the case of Mount and Blade it's possible to build your character as a super-charismatic merchant fucker who talks everyone into doing his bidding and manipulates local economies to make endless dosh without every killing anyone. That would be boring as fuck though, since combat is M&B strongest element.

I would also argue that M&B gives you roleplaying options in the form of how you deal with other Lords, what companions you pick and how you treat them, who you marry, which NPC's you help and which you fuck over etc.

Well, charisma and your own actions will determine how favorable certain NPCs or their factions are towards you which will allow you to do a lot of things. You could use this as leverage for diplomatic relations, getting a mercenary contract, conscripted, becoming a field marshal, being given titles and lordships over castles or towns. You could also just play the entire game being a merchant trading in all sorts of loot from butter to weapons and cattle. You can become a knight who goes around from city to city entering tournaments and dedicating your wins to your beloved to gain her affections.

M&B is one of the most RPG video game around in my opinion. There are so many systems and mechanics built in that you can play your game in a shitload of ways, you essentially build your own story in the game world from the available shit. There are even questlines that you can partake in, become bounty hunters, a mercenary, a merchant, a slave trader, etc. Mods only expanded that shit even more. And if the previews are accurate, Bannerlord is proceeding along the same vision but with a lot of major upgrades like visuals, siege engines, sieges in general and diplomacy.

Alright, thanks, if there is something similar to charisma checks in the game that provide alternative quest solutions, then it's definitely a RPG. So which M&B game is the best one? I've only played the original vanilla game and, to be frank, I really wasn't impressed by anything aside from combat.

Warband, most definitely. It provides the most open base game and there are already a lot of mods that improve functionality. I haven't played the game in a while but I used to use the Floris mod because the diplomacy enhancement it added was tits. Maybe other anons here can recommend more recent mods.

Warband with the Diplomacy mod is currently the most "RPG" M&B experience.

I would honestly just wait until Butterlord comes out though, it's going to have an improved dialog system and economy and the devs have said they are going to try and make the game more interesting for non-combat builds.

I haven't played Viking conquest or w/e it's called, but Napoleonic wars is fucking great.

It's multiplayer only, but if you can find a populated server it's a lot of fun. You have to "get" line era combat to really enjoy NW to it's fullest extent. People tend to be very easygoing and fun loving compared to some MP communities.

Warband is amazing. See if you really enjoy Warband, if you do then Viking Conquest is worth it. Napoleonic Wars is only good if you really really like the multiplayer aspect and wish for guns in multiplayer. All the others are meh at best.

Addendum:

There is a separate "stand-alone" game built on the Warband engine called Blood and Gold: Caribbean if you are into pirates/age of exploration type stuff. It kind of plays like Sid Meier's Pirates! For adults. The devs put in a lot of work giving it proper fleshed out NPC's and quests compared to Vanilla M&B.

I would still recommend Diplomacy, but otherwise Vanilla is perfectly fine. Just keep in mind that Vanilla can get really grindy and boring in the late game without mods.

IIRC there aren't any necessary community patches or anything so you're good to go. Just give the vanilla game a spin for a while and if you like what you have but want a bit more depth or flexibility in the mechanics, just look up the mods on offer. Diplomacy, like >>378005034 said is a great one to have and I think Floris adds a bit more functionality to the towns, villages and settlements that you enter and when you get them under your command. I can't rightly remember anymore.

There's not a whole lot of Roleplaying you can do in M&B. Yes, there a quests, but there is pretty much no variety and it's the same 2-3 quests reused throughout the game. Most of the roleplaying will have to be done in your head like becoming a bandit chief hiding in the woods taking slaves and stuff.

Try the Warsword Conquest mod once you're familiar with M&B. It's insanely well done with tons of factions, weapons, mounts. It's AAA quality with more content than most games released for $60. It may be the best mod for M&B, and is easily the biggest.

It literally is a warhammer mod. They even included playable races so you can be a vampire/ork/dwarf/skeleton/chaosman. They even modeled all the cities from the universe. It feels like a crime downloading it for free.
