Or they use stock background music since they dont consider it important
or the composer has zero range and can only do that "epic action sequence" tune you find in every average action movie

most western games try to emulate stuff from movies so they end up just being background tone setting noise

Jap games tend to make the music themselves be a part of the situation they are used in, which makes it more memorable

The first game's music was better. Autobutter's felt too busy if you ask me.

Anyway, R&C 1-3's music was good. Mick Gordon's stuff is really good, though not really to my taste. Jeremy Seul's music is great. Michael Hoenig's BG soundtrack is pretty unforgettable to me, but I can't rightly say whether it's truly great or I'm just nostalgic for it. Plenty of modern games have fantastic music too, and not even just the one's that borrow from japanese games.

The problem with the west isn't the soundtrack itself it's that they have no idea how to utilize it's fullest. Majority of games have just the soundtrack blarring in the back of the game and you barely notice it unless you focus on it. Japs usually weave it into the game itself which makes it for an amazing experience.

There is almost no room for innovation anymore unless trying to be really experimental, and that would most certainly not work as a videogame soundtrack.

Biggest problem is that the west wants huge orchestra with no memorable hint of a melody ever in almost every AAA game, thus it all sounds the same.
Nintendos composers access a much wider variety of genres and instrumentation for example.
>>
>>378003480
Fucking hell, I'm so over soundtracks that all sound the same. I wish developers would stop using synths and go for more variety with instruments.

Not really helping your argument there. You can't just say "it sounds like everything else" without providing any examples of what it sounds like. Or are you trying to say that because it's an orchestral track that it's generic? In which case I could say fair enough, I guess; I'm not too fond of orchestral stuff either but for some reason BG is an exception. My point is that it's a very memorable track that conveys the atmosphere of the game perfectly, at least to me.

When you "study" music in primary school in the west, they just skim over classical music history, ramble on and on about pop music history. Then they teach the kids how to play some tunes on some instrument(s). And that's usually it.

When you study music in primary school in Asia. They go in depth on musical theory. The math behind it and how it correlates with the common perceptions of music.

This does in no way whatsoever make all Asians into splendid musicians or in any way better than western musicians. It does however mean, that the ones who do become interested in music and pursue a career in music. Have an idea of just what exactly they're doing. They aren't just abstract art fags who go on and on about feelings and emotions with nothing concrete behind how or why.

This means that Asia as an industry. Regularly dishes out far more people who actually know what they're doing. And when you want a score to have deliberate intent behind it, that's what you want. And it's harder to get in the west.

>>
I wish that western composers synced up the music with the Boss fights more, it instantly makes them 10x more memorable. Fights like Ludwig the Accursed/Holy Blade, Ouroboros from Bravely Default, and End of YoRHa become 10x more memorable and hype with the way the music corresponds to whats happening in game.

RDR and GTAV were both built around an algorithm that put together pieces of the track together based on gameplay triggers. They'll probably use the same thing for RDR2 and they did manage to get a bunch of the old timer western musicians they sourced for RDR1.

No, that's just because Sawano is composin 90% of action anime soundtracks. It's a damn shame too, since he actually has range and is capable of creating absolute GOAT soundtracks (see: Blue Exorcist) but he's pigeonholed as the epic technorchestral clusterfuck guy.

I guess the lyrics make it a little bit different but I still think it's one of the most uninteresting tracks on the OST. There are tracks like Memories of Dust, Possessed by Disease, Alien Manifestation that I think much better exemplify Okabe / Nier's music.

It doesn't necessarily need to be bossfights. I mean War to War in Nier:Automata was great because it fight exactly what was happening on screen and it fit the atmosphere that small arc was going for. Route C was memorable the way it was because the sound direction complimented everything else, for example that soundtrack that starts playing when you get infected by the logic virus as 2B . You knew what was gonna happen but the further you got you knew there was no saving.

Nigga you should try listening to it with a bit more of an open mind. When the strings and piano come in it completely removes the carnival part which is only done through the instrumentation. It's called contrast.

Laurence going full fire monster didn't really have the same impact as "ahh you were at my side all along" with the shift into the second half of the track. anything warcraft, including wow's soundtrack (the only thing that was always consistent and good in wow)

diablo 2's soundtrack is top of the line

and a timeless classic, heroes 3. lovely how every town theme mirrors the aesthetics and the residents of that town

from more recent times, deus ex and the witcher come to mind, one with its dystopian cyberpunk vibe, the other with the subtle and not so subtle eastern european pagan references and songs

to sum up, you're a smelly weebshit
>>

While OP was broad in his statement, there isn't much difficulty recognising that older games had good scores. As for modern games though all that's posted are several exceptions to an otherwise boring state of modern music where it just apes film scores and those aren't exactly desireable.

They do. Martin O'Donnell by himself is so far ahead of the curve in terms of game scoring I have no idea why people don't copy him more. There are so many little tricks he puts into sound design that you only consciously notice after reading his interviews.
But even though I could fill the thread with Halo tracks, let me post one of the best soundtracks of the last year which went completely under the radar: Mankind Divided. Perhaps it was because the game wasn't a well made overall as Human Revolution but the score is the best cyberpunk music since Bladerunner. His ambient layering is sublime and something you can only really experience in the game itself, but the soundtrack release still has some great stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWDItAHS9-E
I love how McCann dials in on a clearly brutalist atmosphere but manages to create a distinct tone from both HR and other "Bladerunner-y" soundtracks. Especially in Prague, it just radiates the cynicism of the game's universe. But there's always got to be hope.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVyds-mBQt0
TF29 conveys that incredibly. It's a complex theme, but the instrumentation is so bitingly clear and light that you can't just help but feel like you escaped the rest of the game world. And of course, you have some of the most uniquely textured action tracks out there. My favorite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT8okjbd6bg
McCann is a master of imbuing everything with thick ambience and his own texture, but still creating memorable tunes.

When playing Automata and hearing how well it uses themes and in game mixing all I could think of was "Marty would be fucking proud"

Seriously, it takes skill to do legit bombastic orchestra stuff like he does and still have it sound so fresh.

>before he got fired

I was hyped for destiny, and hearing that he got fired sapped any hope for me befote it even came out.
>>
>>378024562
Agreed. Salvatori's solo tracks, while good in comparison to the rest of the industry, are so painfully lacking in comparison. It's really easy to point out which tracks are his and which are Marty's.

Both are done by the same guy. Jake 'Virt' Kaufman. Probably one of the best western vidya composers right now. He does the music for most Wayforward games and many outside contract work too.
He puts his soundtracks up on his bandcamp for free

Other than Shantae and Shovel Knight I recommend his Mighty Switch Force and Double Dragon Neon OSTs as well.

I always see a pattern with western OST.
Everytime somebody posts its most likely either chiptunes or simplified music meant for a platformer/indie title.

Haven't seen a western recommendation about recent triple A games that sounded good apart from the Witcher 3.

Japanese orchestral music is more focused on melody.

John Williams is really the only western composer who used this philosophy, pretty much all of the rest just produce music that fits the mood

Like older games, the soundtracks are generally better because they don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a fancy sounding but bland orchestra, so they have to put more effort in to make the music good with their shitty tools
