I'd say no. It's a fun as fuck card game and no other game lets you do such jank shit in the tournament format. Most all LGS have tournaments too.
But the game is largely considered to be in a dying state right now and it's a pretty poor financial decision to invest into something dying.
The cause of it is konami the makers just jewing the fuck out of the game for years and making mechanics out of left field that no one asked for. Also HUGE power creep problem, your cards won't be banned in 3 years but they also won't stand a chance against the new shit.

This is coming from a judge who also played competitively for a very long time.

if you're playing lower tier decks against other lower tier decks the game is great fun. the meta is hit or miss, the current format is fucking awful but some formats are great to play. wait for a few months until links before you drop money on the game though

If you want to give it a try, download YGOPro rather than buying cards irl. It'll save you money, and you can fuck around with old decks against the AI.

It's also fully automated so you don't have to know the in-depth rulings of each card, just play it and the program will know what it does.
